It's because they peak and clip while auto level is on on the mic. (The microphone reaches the maximum amount of audio they can take in, at the same time as it adjusts the level of volume to take in automatically)
What you hear with your ear can nearly never be compared to that in any shape or form of playback.

These drivers are actually quite skilled. They could have easily killed a ton of people standing on the side of the road yet they avoid them like it's a piece of cake.
