Never seen a jet powered tractor before.
was not expecting this to be in Germany

They're 2 Klimov TV3 helicopter turbine engines, same kind the famous Hind uses.
They produce 2200hp each.
That one with the radial engine at 2:40 is cool as fuck.
Holy shit they almost look like podracers.
As a sport I find this boring.
But for the different builds, the engines, combos, all that mechanical stuff, it's like Mecca!
As cynical as it is, the best part of tractor pulls is watching the engines explode.
When they go they really do go.

well, they're blowing the assholes out of these engines with little to no cooling, it's a matter of when, not if they'll blow.
That said, I love over the top motor sports like this. The europeans seem to like it more than us americans.

Classic tractor pulling is just as neat, I love watching these old machines struggle.

The Lanz Bulldog, the third tractor in the vid i posted, truly gave no fucks. It was the little engine that could.

:v:
Turbines, radial engines, but none of them have tried a steam engine.

110HP, but ??????????????? lb/ft of torque. It just goes and goes!
[editline]19th September 2015[/editline]
Spoiler: the steam tractor simply out weighs the sled by some large margin, and thoes big steel wheels have more traction than the sled. But it sure helps that it's got a 100000000000000 lb/ft torque. That shit could move a mountain!
Steam engines are almost as good as electric motors when it comes to torque. Since they push on both sides of the piston, they create torque from 0 rpm, and steam is faaaaaaaar more powerful than gasoline when it comes to the power stroke.
That fucking steam engine tho!
Holy fuck!
Holy crap the radial one and the fucking russian jet one were great. These are all cool as fuck
Radial engines are fucking rad, but an absolute nightmare to maintain and run. They have long start up processes. They cut it out in that vid, but they have to turn the motor over without ignition to make sure there is no oil in the cylinders, otherwise the engine will hydro lock and shit all over itself. They're also naturally difficult to tune and idle, and just generally run like shit. Only one cylinder can be fired at a time per rotor, and at most two per rotor on a power stroke, where as a v or in line engine can have several at a time firing and on a power stroke.
More evidence that radials are finicky as shit is that in the video it stopped running, then decided it wanted to run again.
The only advantage a radial has is the it's compact and can be expanded by shoving more rotors on each other, like a wankel engine.
Tl;Dr fuck radials.
This shit is like pod racing for red necks
Can someone fill me in on what they're doing? It isn't x distance over y time right? Do the tractors they pull eventually start going in reverse until the one pulling doesn't move?
Those seem tiny compared to what I used to see when I was younger, you'd see like 4 Gas Turbines stacked on each other making a stupid cool looking Puller.
Was expecting this.

You're thinking of stuff like this

No, the sled in back has a moving weight that puts more and more weight on the front of the sled as the tractor moves, making it harder to over come friction. It's why these tractors are so batshit crazy- they try to go as fast as they can so that they can get a "full pull".

There's a lot of different classes. It's a surprisingly diverse motorsport and it's surprisingly awesome to watch.
