What about vanguard or fidelity?
Reputable mutual stocks should do the trick; bonds have basically no risk at all and thus the interest is low.
Or if you're competent enough try a mix of stocks from mid range companies with good prospects for the future, such as pharmaceuticals, water transport, energy, computers?
What I plan on doing is buy cheap arable land and lease it to big industrial agriculture companies. You get an annual cereal yeld/hectare ofaround 400kg-1ton in ,simmilar to what a bank's interest would be.But the good part is that you get a secure investment wich is bound to increase tenfold. Right now the price of a hectare is 1k$ in Romania(and I would guess in other third world countries aswell), whereas a hectare in the UK is close to 50k$. so if you buy 50.000$ worth of arable land now you might be able to sell it at 2.5million in about 15-20 years.
