Nursing homes in the Netherlands have moved more and more to "belevingsgericht" (translated: experience centric), where old people still have control over their own lives and live in environments that resemble their old homes. Examples are mostly in policy changes: back in the day people got up when the nurses asked them to. They got washed, clothed, had breakfast, medicine etc. when the nurses had planned it. Everything obeyed a schedule. Nowadays people can decide when they go to bed, when they want to get up. They can choose when to have breakfast etc. It's a huge improvement over what it used to be, but with the recent cuts in health care spending there isn't enough personnel to stick to the "belevingsgerichte" approach. This hurts both employees (in stress) and the elderly, who often can't find a nursing homes because they are being demolished despite the increase of elderly people in need.
