Not sure how FP feels about Vice documentaries of late but this one seems fairly good. While these people have been kicking around for ages (like those people who claimed to get radio through their fillings), it really shows the powerful confirmation-bias like effect the internet can have on these group of people. Somewhat feel sad for them, as it's led them to some pretty dangerous things[sp]like the guy that operated on himself to remove what he suspected were tracking devices[/sp], and they're unlikely to seek outside help when they have a community that helps sustain their paranoia.
Have psychologists been able to figure out what can cause this kind of life style?

I don't think targeted individuals for some kind of testing is completely out of the realm of reality, given what governments have done in the past and our current technological capabilities. Most are probably schizophrenic or something, but i'd believe it if there were a few real cases.

There have been things like the epidemiology studies, and even large scale projects involving people either recruited or generally coerced (see: the syphilis trials), but what would they possibly gain from devoting such resources to a single guy? Even if they had some reason to suspect, say, a certain lifestyle or demographic, surely the one in question isn't as rare as one individual, or even a handful, in an area that's majority this-age or this-race. It just seems hideously impractical.

And you couldn't very well test these kinds of things if the participants were willing and informed. I could absolutely see this being done in the name of "developing devices to improve national security and safety" or something like that. I really wouldn't put it past the government.
