I don't know what the concussive force of a firework is but potentially he could be harmed even if none of the fireworks hit him. Part of the reason EOD suits are so thick isn't just to stop shrapnel, its to minimize the damage from the blast wave of an explosive which is just as dangerous because it can damage organs without leaving outward signs until you pee blood a week later. Also metal was probably a horrible material to go with.
