A quick context behind this for those who don't know: Project M was a mod that modified Super Smash Bros Brawl to be more like Super Smash Bros Melee, but they dropped the project in late 2015. This is their new project now.
Saw this yesterday, looks horribly generic TBH. Which is odd, cause for a game like this you should try to aim for it to look inspired.
Not only does it look generic, but even the fighters themselves have moves ripped off from Smash. That girl with a sword especially, all of the moves she performs are all from Marth, and not only that but she literally does the popular and effective Ken combo at 0:44. Compare: Honestly, there is talent in the PM team but this just looks like an asian rip-off

I understand wanting to make their own Melee game and what not, but I feel like the characters should actually be original instead of copying moves directly from smash itself.
Rivals of Aether did their movesets the best by making mostly original moves, but when they wanted to use some Smash style moves they'd mix up tilts/aerials/smashes from many different Smash characters onto one person instead of making one character "The Fox one" or "The Marth one". They're usually mixtures with each having ideas not explored in a Smash game before as well (Orcane has a very different Up Special recovery from anyone in Smash for example). I hope this game can pull through and actually turn out good, but the fact that they thought this was good enough to show scares me a bit.

The game is intentionally meant to mirror Smash and the art style is just the result of the team being indie/new artists. The designs aren't awful, aren't great but it's okay. There are most likely a lot of Smash players who are excited because the game will be familiar but will most likely also bring some new ideas on top of the current Smash formula, which is what P:M was but they can't use the Smash IP anymore. I don't even play Smash but it's very clear who they are targeting with this game.

As a Smash player (even though Melee is the worst smash IMO), if I wanted to play Melee, I'll play melee. The things I look forward to with a smash clone or an even new installment is changes in characters, new characters, unique movesets and how every character plays, not playing the same old shit. If I wanted to play the same old shit, I just go back to a previous game. A Melee clone with the same movesets with bootleg characters won't attract anyone, even diehard Melee fans. Diehard Melee fans will just stick with Melee. They won't buy a new game.
I'm all for a melee clone, but they really need to hire a different artist. I'd be embarrassed playing this...

The game is their replacement for Project M and is more targeted to fans of PM. PM did a nice job with their nerf/buff philosophy and they managed to make the entire roster of SSBB viable in high-level play while keeping most of the Melee speed and tech. The biggest complaint I have about Melee is how it's meta made all the characters I wanted to play useless in the high level. That's why me and others would rather play PM where the variety becomes insane. The only downside is it's "not Melee". As you said, the people who just want to play Melee still stick with Melee. Anyways I'm expecting they're going to do the same with this game. There's obviously clones of the S-tiers in Melee to appeal to the Fox and Marth mains and etc. but there's some clips of characters that I couldn't identify so maybe they made some originals too. Does look kinda generic but whatever it's their first game.
I don't mind them making their own characters, but I think it would have been maybe wiser to wait until they had more to show than the same 3 characters sparring with combos taken from smash for one and a half minutes
Honestly, I think this could've been way more interesting if they "licensed" existing, popular indie IPs. I've always dreamed of a Smash-like brawler filled with indie characters. The visual design is just too bland and uninspired. I still think a reimagined 3D version of Shovel Knight fighting Super Meat Boy would be amazing. Imagine popping open a Braid assist trophy that rewinds the battle a few seconds. You could have Quote from Cave Story blasting the fuck out of Owlboy. You could have Commander Video, Isaac, the Hyper Light Drifter dude, Bastion Kid, the Castle Crashers, Spelunky dude, Dead Cells dude - loads of different character types to bring in, with a variety of fighting styles. That's my dream game, honestly, but if this is good I'll be excited.

They won't touch another Smash or Smash styled game unless it's exactly like Melee. I know there's some pro Melee players who have yet to play a single game of Smash 4. For them, it basically comes down to "no top tier space animal = no buy"
