It's pretty amazing how far 3d visualization has come in only 15 years.
The Computer Chronicles was a great fucking show, especially to watch now.
All the stuff that was the hot stuff in the industry back then is so fascinating to watch.

Next 15 years are pretty much going to become the golden age in graphics, better hardware, better tools for artists to create even higher resolution models, even higher resolutions on screens, VR and so on.

Consoles are holding graphics back. While PC's get stronger and stronger, the consoles sit on the same hardware for 5-7 years, and since they're so popular, games are made with those specs in mind. More games than not do not push 1 to 2 year old hardware at all, unless it's just a poorly optimized port.
I'm waiting for a different method of creating models, one that doesn't use polygons or take forever to make in 3DSMax, but offer greater and finer details without taxing video cards as much as the traditional model made from many polygons. I remember seeing something like this using many dots or pixels or some weird shit. Something like this is going to be the breakthrough in graphics.
You can stack horsepower on top of horsepower to pull more weight, but eventually something's going to hit a ceiling until you find a new way to carry the weight. It's a shit analogy but it works

Most games already have tons of higher resolution models to generate realistic bumpmaps and such, they're just optimized further because hardware can't handle rendering that many polygons.

It's called ZBrush and it doesn't take ages to make models if you have skill for it, so polygons will stay.

There is more than that to it than meets the eye, also fuck no textures are heavier to render than models, since they use more draw calls.

Stop. I'm with Jim Sterling when it comes to better graphics, we're not pushing the same amount anymore because we've hit points where we've found the most efficient method that fools the human eye.
We should be aiming for immersion(AI, Story Telling, Scripting, Gameplay) and efficient code usage(Efficient use of hardware, memory, using less memory to get more done) instead of trying to force out the next generation what is essentially lens flare.

While Rage itself wasn't anything special, the implications behind the game engine were really good. An effective and efficient method to use large as hell textures and world environments without using bump maps and the like. That'll free up [B]so much fucking memory.[/B]

New Wolfenstein was probably far better, I really liked how they baked the global illumination lighting in that engine, at some parts it was gorgeous, and I think this whole megatextures deal is using fewer but bigger texture sheets and they also stream in engine so it's important to have pretty fast pc in order to make it barely noticeable.
I like how the guy doing the interview keeps thinking that the 3Dfx card actually converts 2D games to 3D.
This made me miss my godly 1600x1200 CRT monitor that weighed as much as a fridge

Look at the first PS3 games vs. late-gen PS3 releases such as The Last Of Us
I think the craziest thing about watching these old computer shows is the price of the hardware and software. Back in the day a basic midrange pc cost a grand without a monitor, and now you can pick up a new capable laptop for a little over $300.
We are finally getting to the point that hardware has become more than capable for most workloads.
