He has already apologized for oversimplifying the intro, but he is still feeling heat for it:

EDIT:
He just made an apology video:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/9198-Tomopology-Life
its fucking video games at the end of the day who cares
Hit the nail on the head. I don't know why people hate this guy so much.
Jim Sterling has released a statement about the over simplification:
Some people (such as this one: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.849789-Jimquisition-Tomodachi-Strife#20988250) have raised concerns about factual inaccuracies in your latest Jimquisition. Do you think you may have misrepresented the issue?
I oversimplified it, which is the trouble of producing a less-than-ten-minute video in which the subject I raise was not the subject people are focusing on. This is something I tried to rectify visually, though maybe that was not clear enough.
The actual *subject* of the video still stands, so I don't personally think it is as big a deal, and I worry a lot of the pointing out of the initial error is being done to obfuscate the actual topic at hand. Nevertheless, I will likely address the oversimplification next week. The problem with videos is you can't just update 'em on the fly.

Hit the nail on the head. I don't know why people hate this guy so much.
Because they don't understand that he's playing a character, mostly.
Because they don't understand that he's playing a character, mostly.
I understand that he's playing a character, but I REALLY don't like the character. It's the same with Angry Joe and Totalbiscuit. Are they actually pretty agreeable and generally nice people? Yeah, sometimes. But the characters they portray really bug me to the point of not watching their videos.
Because they don't understand that he's playing a character, mostly.
So does that invalidate people not liking him?
If hes putting on a shit character then hes still being shit to the people that dislike him. I understand hes playing a character, but I hate him because hes generally someone who makes clickbait or jumps onto anything that has even an ounce of controversy surrounding it and then tries and make it seem like some big thing.
Thats all hes ever been, which is exactly why hes doing something on this whole tomadochi shit which is fucking absurd because everything surrounding it is fucking nuts. Its just some random game Nintendo is making and people are trying to make it seem like some big ass shit.
Why is it so hard to talk about the actual topic of the video instead of fixating entirely on Jim's persona? This happens every time.
I think the main problem here is something I've stated before.
It only takes so many people to talk about how bad the games industry is, how devs and publishers are greedy and careless, and etc, until most of us actual gamers just don't want to hear it anymore and just want to play fucking video games. You know, enjoy a game rather than look deep for anything to make a 20 thread page bitching about all of it's flaws and how the game is now terribad for it.

people always act so fucking vulnerable. You annoy me.
"aaa he didnt dress up his argument so he must be a huge dick but i agree wih him"
Hit the nail on the head. I don't know why people hate this guy so much.
I started watching him the other day, I can see why the way he presents his character would grate on people but I personally find him hilarious as well as extremely agreeable on things like his Early Access videos. Just works together perfectly for me.

I think this is why people don't pay more attention to things. People get sick of hearing about it and end up ignoring it.

Ouch. This is the first Jimquisition that I disagree with. Mostly because he's just plain wrong on his facts, though. And it's not an "oversimplification" like he claims. He's just plain wrong.
In the video he outright says that Nintendo patched homosexuality out of the game in Japan, which isn't true at all. Anyone who's been following the issue knows that homosexuality was never in the game, and a major save-corruption bug that could sometimes swap Miis in and out of relationships (and thus potentially cause homosexual relationships) is what was patched. This was misconstrued by western journalists last year and it spread like wildfire. I'll never understand how the internet, often lauded as the greatest reservoir of knowledge and information in history, is such an efficient vehicle for misinformation.
I also agree with this guy that he misunderstood Nintendo's messages and ignored the whole Japanese side of things, much like most of gaming journalism did (which really just goes to show that he follows bad sources). I honestly feel sorry for Nintendo at this point, because they probably didn't see any of this coming. The best course of action for them would've likely been to just stay silent on the issue like they usually do. Nintendo was nice and responsive for once and we blew it.
Probably also blew our chances of getting more unique and quirky Japanese games like this over here too now that Nintendo knows better. That is, unless Tomodachi Life sells a ton despite the controversy. I have a feeling the controversy is localized to the more 'hardcore' side of the gaming internet and that the general public doesn't even know. Nintendo should just continue with their marketing push to casual gamers. I'd love to see this sell hot millions so we can secure the series' future in the west. I've been playing Tomodachi Collection lately and even with its much simpler set of features it's great fun.
If you wanna read an actual, informed article (because this guy has actually played the review copy of the game and gives some great insight into how the gameplay works and why that's a pretty big element in all this) on this issue, check this out: http://gamasutra.com/blogs/ChristianNutt/20140508/217351/Understanding_Nintendos_Tomodachi_Life_problem.php

Besides that, this is really just a localization job for the people at Nintendo of America. I am guessing that a small group of people are working on the title to translate the text and to reintroduce the TTS system in English, sad to see it unpack like this.
Well holy shit, he posted a followup correction and apology: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/9198-Tomopology-Life
Much respect for Jim.

You seem to have a pretty negative opinion of video games for someone on a video game forum

Huge props for him doing that. He could have stood his ground, but he chose the humble route.

so basically babies are crying because they just want to devour their stupid videogames?
like, will tomadachi life or bioshock whatever or watch_dogs or wolfenstein the new game become a bad game if people ask "where are the gay people" or "why aren't there that many women" or "how come X isn't represented?" the way a lot of you are talking sounds like those statements are detrimental to a game's quality.
also nothing would ever happen in society if people just sat down and refused to talk about something because "waaaaah i just wanna enjoy it," so just leave these threads, go post on /v/, or cover your ears and rock in a corner if you don't want to listen to these arguments.
its fucking video games at the end of the day who cares
but if i cant have sexual relations with a video game what is the point of playing it????
the video games i get must always be bold with political views or else it's racist/sexist/homophobic trash. Besides, who plays video games for entertainment value anymore?
serious talk though, this blew out of proportion. it's cool nintendo will allow it in the future but the marriage part seems like a very small part of the game. the fact it blew up so large is stupid.
This was blown out of proportion, but yeah Nintendo fucked up by saying that it would be some big political statement when it's most likely is just a check to see if two Miis are the same gender.
I don't agree with Nintendo not including same-sex marriage, but it's like one little thing in the game, and calling them homophobic is overreaction.
so basically babies are crying because they just want to devour their stupid videogames?
What he's saying is, people get tired of hearing about the same things over and over again, to the point where they'd just rather ignore it, instead of investing their time in a discussion that goes no where.
like, will tomadachi life or bioshock whatever or watch_dogs or wolfenstein the new game become a bad game if people ask "where are the gay people" or "why aren't there that many women" or "how come X isn't represented?" the way a lot of you are talking sounds like those statements are detrimental to a game's quality.
Why should it matter if they are or aren't represented? It's fiction, it's a writers version of a fantasy universe, characters should serve the context of the narrative, not some arbitrary checklist of real world characteristics.
also nothing would ever happen in society if people just sat down and refused to talk about something because "waaaaah i just wanna enjoy it," so just leave these threads, go post on /v/, or cover your ears and rock in a corner if you don't want to listen to these arguments.
Kinda like what you're doing now.
Also after reading this post a few time, I found it amusing how you were advocating for discussion and an ampler representation in video games, and at the same time, every time someone mentions taking things at face value your reaction is to, ironically, call them crybabies and ignore their opinion.
Can't quote because I'm on my phone, but the reason I dismiss "why can't we just videogames stop crying" opinions is because of their gross defeatist attitude that doesn't even attempt to come up with a solution.
Like, its the same way in every thread. If social equality is not a priority for you in the media you consume, go away. Talking about it brings nothing but good.

Talking about it doesn't do jack shit except make slacktivists feel like they've accomplished something.
"Woo, we admonished a company on twitter, let's go pat ourselves on the back and congratulate ourselves for 140 characters well spent."

So what? You yourself admit that they bring nothing to the debate, so why bother acknowledging them, focus on the posts that actually generate discussion? There will always be people who will just rather enjoy things at its surface value, get their enjoyment out of the media they are consuming, and move on to the next piece, it's how most people function.

There's talking about issues, and then there's injecting them into places where they don't belong, it gets exhausting of seeing the same topic being brought into just about everything, not saying this applies here, although it does to an extent.
Since same sex relationships were a side effect of a bug that effected the 3ds software and corrupted save data, and the media spun it as "Nintendo patched out same sex relationships out of tomodachi life".

like, are you even reading what you're posting lol
discussions that end up leaving people with these thoughts in their minds are useless unless they directly make an impact, like, right away? i mean what. if you can name a rights movement that immediately had an upheaval of the status quo please let me know.
like, this is what makes up the majority of movements for equal rights: people seeing and taking part in discussions and arguments, and eventually thinking "hey, maybe it shouldn't be the way it is now." then stuff happens. that's what happened with this. people asked those nintendo reps "why aren't there gay people" and nintendo replied and went "sorry, we'll try to be more inclusive next time." even if it's just them blowing off people, the fact that a big games company listened and responded accordingly is a step in the right direction.

sorry that people like to bring up gay relationships in a game, that already has straight relationships, where both male and female avatars exist? yeah, there was a lot of misinformation being spread around about the alleged gay relationships in tomadachi life (which i also fell for because i didn't read the articles posted later that day haha oops), but the fact that people abused the bug in order to have psuedo-gay relationships (or just to mess around and have fun, which is also fair game) shows that there is a demographic that wants them, even in japan.
like, do you just expect minorities to sit on the sidelines and only speak up by asking questions about a fucking videogame when everyone else says it's okay*?
*aka never
i'm really seeing that a lot. like, there's been a lot of jim threads and other threads where some dude comes in and says "ugh can we not talk about this ALL THE TIME?" then when the fuck are we supposed to talk about it? during ~predetermined consensual debate time ft. no upset gamers~? will answering questions like "why are there no black people in this game" or "how come i can't be gay in this game with a lot of customization" or "why do the women have these clothes while the men have these?" have literally any negative impact on the games you play?
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
