The Aokigahara Forest is the most popular site for suicides in Japan. After the novel Kuroi Jukai was published, in which a young lover commits suicide in the forest, people started taking their own lives there at a rate of 50 to 100 deaths a year. The site holds so many bodies that the Yakuza pays homeless people to sneak into the forest and rob the corpses. The authorities sweep for bodies only on an annual basis, as the forest sits at the base of Mt. Fuji and is too dense to patrol more frequently. this is pretty macabre, but yeah it surfaced in the original creepy thread yeeaars ago. there's plenty of people who haven't heard of it before, though. or don't believe it.
The prefect used to post signs and employees to convince people not to take their own lives but the economy has put a stop to that.
You can learn a lot from the trails. A lot of psychological and cultural bits keep me interested in this portion of Japanese culture, seeing as suicide is something that has been a part of the people (at least since the 1500's).
The prefect used to post signs and employees to convince people not to take their own lives but the economy has put a stop to that.
I find this the most unsettling news of all.
I heard about this on Quite Interesting just two days ago :v:
I think this was featured in Destination Truth.
Curious to know if there were any games that reference this. All I can think of are those hanging women traps in Cry of Fear.
