It was a dream.
I once knew a guy like this, lived off the wilderness for 20 years. He died a few years ago from a rough winter apparently.

The only thing that angered me was that he didn't kill the fish, cut it half way and stuck it on a tree. You can still see it cut in half and breathing.

he ate the valuable meat off of it and stuck the rest to a tree. probably for birds or bugs to eat. if that's the case, the dude really respects nature more than the average person that throws garbage on the ground without even thinking about it.

Winters in the southern US are generally very mild. In Florida, we get maybe a weeks worth of sub-40*F nights.
This sounds like a pretty bad case of resorting to escapism, only for things to turn sour when he thinks everything might be alright. It's even worse that he got shot on his 21st birthday, so now he'll probably just be too paranoid to stick around people anymore. He'll probably end up living out in the forest for the rest of his life.

Because he can do a lot of what I can't and he has dedication to do it well. I can respect that. Being a good/bad father is not the ultimate respect deciding factor.
