I wonder how they found it, though I can see how it works in the code that being on a vine when there's a level transition causes the vine to spawn in the next level loaded and because luigi died on the vine it still counted as a transition and therefore it would spawn when the level mario is on loads.
Okay but why did Mario have to die at that point? Isn't there some earlier point where it would work?

They probably chose 1-2 because the buzzy beetles spawn at the beginning of the map (in new game +), and would be easy to bounce on back and forth.
Couldn't you already do something like this on World 1-1 with a Koopa shell bouncing off of a brick or a pipe or something while Mario repeatedly jumped on it, which would continue adding to your score and start giving you one-ups every time you got more points beyond 1000? Because I'm pretty sure that exploit has been known for years.

I think it's less the specific method of getting lives, and more the idea that you can glitch out the level transition there via one of the hidden vines intentionally. It's way too specific to be of any use but I sure as hell had no idea it was possible to do the vine trick. The video seems to be tool-assisted anywho, so it seems more like a 'yeah you can do this' thing.
