Is that really a thing?

Yep, they come around taking scrap electronics people don't want or can be arsed transporting and just give them then. Yeah some people can make a return by doing it themselves but no one is really bothered enough to strip down a fucking washing machine so they just have the travellers come around to pick it up, then they go and strip it down for scrap metal then resell it. Makes them a decent living and people who don't want broken stuff get it removed for no charge.
It's a win/win basically.

here are my experiences with them:
they stole my bike and my grandad's bike on two seperate occasions
one of them told me he killed a man and served time
the other is the most genuine guy i've ever met and has had my family's back instantly so many times and has been at my door within 30 seconds to help, now a friend of the family (he was employed by my dad so we met him there)

That's really awesome, it's basically a private recycling business.
Here, the kind of people who would look for that kind of profit, usually just steal the metals :<

Same here. You can add the occasional dog stealing and trying to sell milk in the morning.

You don't have 'em in a America? If you leave your old broken washing machine out and go to work/school the next day then it'll be gone by the time you get home, even here in the richer part of England.

We do. Somewhat. I've seen people come by houses and pick up junk or old computers, ect. Don't know what he's going on about. And not sure if we have a special name for them.
I'm from Chicago and all the junkmen here are Mexicans, but it's the same exact thing. Trucks with boarded up beds drive around and pick up junk appliances or other scrap. I've never heard of them stealing bikes or dogs or anything though.

Except for that fucking horrific noise. Never, ever giving them anything just because i've had that every other day for over a decade back home.

That happens here too but it's usually just because if you leave anything of value out on the sidewalk without any sign you're home it'll disappear.
Heh, we used to have guys that did the exact thing in Iran, never knew that gypsies in the UK did it as well.

In Rockford it's usually Latinos who do the same thing, but we have a lot of people who take the cans from your recycling bins to make a few cents.
My family has made it easier for them though. Any scrap metal or scrap stuff in general is separated from the rest of the trash and easier to grab, and we have a recycling bin entirely dedicated to aluminum cans.
