So one of my favorite websites ever, Badass of the Week (http://badassoftheweek.com/chavin.html) did an article on the Chavin De Huantar raid. Basically, the Japanese embassy in Lima, Peru was attacked by a group of 14 terrorists who were armed with automatic weapons, land mines, hand grenades and they all had military training. The siege lasted for 4 months and culminated in an all-or-nothing assault by the Peruvian military. The assault plan was extremely complicated and the chance of failure was high. 140 commandos would assault in multiple teams through nine tunnels burrowed underneath the embassy building. They would attack by blowing up the floor from underneath the terrorists while they were playing football, while another team of commandos would charge through the front door weapons blazing. A smaller team of three commandos would scale the walls while it all kicked off and take control of the roof, also blasting a hole in it and descending through it to kill any terrorists who might be trying to kill the hostages. The raid was an astounding success, but it came with a heavy price. One hostage was dead and two commandos died, one from friendly fire and another while shielding a hostage from a hand grenade with his own body. All of the terrorists were killed. This all happened while the entire world watched and as a result, the astounding footage is still around.
