it's crazy just how quickly this games main selling point and "new technology" had become outdated and just creepy looking.

I don't think its creepy looking. Its amazing technology for the time and the facial animations are still highly convincing.
I've got mixed feelings about LA Noire's facial capture technique. On one hand it allowed for some of the most realistic facial expressions seen in a video game. On the other, I couldn't quite shake off the fact that it could feel like a video file playing over a synchronized facial model at times.

Honestly the animations look great, all that was missing in LA Noire was some nicer shaders and better lighting.
To an extent, that's more or less what it was. :v:
Guess that makes sense, but realizing that the inside of the characters' mouth is but a well done trompe-l'-oeil is still a bit jarring.

LA Noire is a game I have to play but I'll likely just do it with a guide to cheat through it I bought it for 60$ and barely played it. I wanted to like it, it's an amazing game with amazing style and amazing facial animations but it just isn't my thing. I never liked those games.
Yeah I remember how I lost my shit at that expression in OP video... Couldn't come near my computer for 20 minutes, each time I'd just burst out laughing looking at the screen.
I don't know, most games don't model the inside of people's nostrils and that doesn't bother me.
I find that mouths are bit more prominent than nostrils.
I didn't think it looked good to begin with. The animation isn't going to mean shit when everyone's face has the texture of silly putty.
Does anyone have the link to the video where Phelps is interrogating this guy in the police station and starts hammering him with accusations of him killing his wife, but then says nvm.

The tutorial one is the best though for when you fuck up and have to do it over.

That guy is totally hiding a triple genocide.
I don't think its creepy looking. I thought the facial animations were amazing, but because they wanted to show off their amazing new technology, all the actors over-acted and a lot of the expressions came off as forced and unnatural.
i agree, in the blooper reel, when they cracked up, they looked so much more natural
Does anyone have the link to the video where Phelps is interrogating this guy in the police station and starts hammering him with accusations of him killing his wife, but then says nvm.
At least it's possible to back out of those. It took me a really long time to get that "doubt" is not really "doubt", that it sends Phelps flipping out, flaunting wild accusations at witnesses and saying stupidest shit imaginable.
Their eyes don't have a realistic sheen and their head/neck movement doesn't have any bearing on their collar, shoulders, and chest. So their heads just kinda bobble around while their bodies are rigid, it's annoying once you notice it.
I still find myself being amazed by some of the intricacies the motion capture got, like microexpressions.
I still find myself being amazed by some of the intricacies the motion capture got, like microexpressions.
It's not really motion capture. It's pretty much just capturing a video texture from all sides and generating a model that moves along with the video.

What was that one video of that one dude and he kept nodding and shaking his head and someone was talking over it and going "hmmmm yep... hmm no..." or something like that
I think one of the problems was that the characters had such high-detail faces and then comparably lesser-detailed bodies.
Despite whatever problems the game itself may have, the concept for the animation and execution are incredible, and implemented properly in modern games it would probably be awesome. I'm willing to look past whatever other problems there may be, I still think the facial animations themselves are fantastic. Although! I do think that the sound design could use work, because the voice audio never seems to properly sit into the environment.
