I'm still watching it, but the time difference before Shephard arrives really is long and here's me thinking he arrives almost straight after the accident.
Because he does arrive with the rest of the HECU soldiers, this time-line has it wrong.
It's totally possible he was blacked out for a while until his part actually starts with the gameplay in the vid but he, for sure, showed up in the first day and not the second, since Barney's entire campaign is in the first day and you can overhear soldiers talking about being pissed that Shepard isn't up yet.
I always loved this aspect of the first Half Life game and it's expansions. Having the three different weaving timelines showing the different perspectives of the incidents. Really makes the games feel like they're based around the incident itself and the people in it rather than raw gameplay appeal.
Do any other games have situations like this? Significant events or locations explored by different characters around the same time? I'm sure that's vague enough to fit a lot of different games, but Half Life did it so well. I want more of that.
damn, stuff really got intense after the incident. The sound of the announcements along with warnings, casualties give me chills.

Not that I can think of. GTA IV and it's expansions are all separate stories that all take place in the same city with some events tying the stories together but they are their own independent stories. I can't think of much else.

Resident Evil 6 tried it but it was a bit of a mess in execution
It's always impressive when I see full views of levels in old games.

It looks like it could be a real facility.
F.E.A.R 1 and F.E.A.R 2 are like that I believe. Or maybe it's F.E.A.R 1 and its DLC?
yeah you're thinking of fear 1 and the dlc i think, I can't mind if fear 2's dlc was during or after the main game, either way, like 3 perspectives were covered in fear 1's while only one was done in fear 2
It looks like it could be a real facility.
The only problem is that in reality there's a ton of over-lapping levels, but I get what you mean.
That was pretty cool to see the games synced together like that.
i like how the emergency broadcast system image was taken from that one cutscene in mw2
Yeah that's how I thought, Shephard blacks out for an unknown length of time before waking up.
What about Gordon? Seeing zombies shortly after departing from the test chamber implies that he was either gone for an extensive amount of time, or these scientists already became one with the headcrabs before the incident, which seems unlikely.

Also the military comms in the background.
This video may have its flaws but I still think it's really interesting to see how much of this fictional disaster we're familiar with. It's oddly immersive in a way.
Anyone else getting DEFCON vibes from this?
half-life source :vomit:
Anyone know what track(s) were used in the video? The description doesn't help and the first one sounds like NIN.

There's some HL soundtrack in there, but not all of it is.
Cool video. I'd love to see some psychotically dedicated fan do the same thing with a chunk of the numerous single player mods out there.

I can think of a few books that pull of radically different perspectives in closely interwoven timelines. Even a few that are on opposing sides of conflicts.
I can't really think of any other games that pulled it off well.

I really love the idea behind this though. It's superb.
It's a shame he seems to be afraid of not using the "best looking content" (HD pack, HLS, BM vox).
He could fix the timelines, use LD/HL1, use HL1 vox, and maybe put Decay and it'd be downright fantastic.
It might be tricky to get Decay to line up with Blue Shift, because Rosenberg is in the first third of Decay, then he has to get locked in a trainyard for Barney to find him. Decay also ends at almost the exact same time Blue Shift ends, because you can hear Rosenberg yelling at Barney to go through the portal. You'd need to sync up Gordon getting knocked out, Barney jumping through the portal AND having two people beat Decay at nearly the exact same time, which is probably easier said than done

True getting Decay to line up would be a right bitch but I'd honestly like to see someone redo this but with Decay in there as well, it'd really give the whole picture.

The announcements are super spooky because as soon as the event happens it feels like the computer is backed up and making constant announcements because everything went to shit at once and continues to go to shit so the warning you're hearing are sometimes several minutes and maybe even hours old as it reads through the backed up queue.

It would be cool, although it would never happen if Valve did a Black Mesa-style reboot of the HL1 incident with several story lines again. Military, Security, Scientist and so on.
Have a chapter where you literally play as the AI trying to close doors, issue announcements, track people, send medical teams, report security breaches and so on until it becomes overwhelming just to illustrate the gravity and scope of the incident.
Lots of interesting things can be done with it.
[editline]27th August 2017[/editline]
Alien Isolation style Scientist storyline where you hide and crawl around trying to not be torn apart by Xen creatures or shot on sight by Military.
I don't know how it would work exactly, but a real-time version of the Black Mesa event in like a super-game merging of all 4 perspectives would be an interesting idea. Or perhaps a multiplayer experience where someone's Blue Shift game is linked to someone else's regular Half-Life game but the Resonance Cascade would be the only such time a crossover would happen...
Or maybe as the basis of a whole new game, it's probably already been done. A story 'unfolding in real time' has already been done a fair few times but I don't think it's been done with multiple perspectives offered, nor as a co-operative experience. And I mean as a narrative goes on, not just a single battle with two separated players.

Aliens vs. Predator 2 had the marine, predator and alien campaign all intersect and cross together in interesting ways.
the original black mesa hits me with the hardest nostalgia
there's just something ineffable about it that nails the liminal period between the 90s and 2000s. i really couldn't even tell you what. maybe it's just nostalgia but i definitely think it's something written into the setting and story. just rewatching game makes me think about all kinds of totally unrelated memories from when i was a kid. it's crazy.

This son of a Bullsquid is trying to retcon out Gina Cross and all of Decay! Not on my watch, bucko!

Nobody except me likes the story of that game, but Sonic Adventure 1. SA2 applies to a lesser extent.
Resident Evil 2 and 3 have crossover, and I believe that both Outbreak titles take place during 3 as well?
Nier Automata as well.
