Though he does have some wonky ass interpretations, but considering for example people interpret/block out parts of the bible that obviously contradict their modern beliefs, I gotta say keep on reforming if it stops wife beating and apostate killing.
Some people within the community and elsewhere label Imam Tawhidi a fake: http://www.abc.net.au/religion/articles/2017/04/11/4651763.htm (reputation report on Australia's ABC is very high) Take it as the Muslim community disagreeing with him because of his views or whatever, I like what he says but I also hear the people who say he's not what he says he is

It is very similar to how quakers or other small Christian groups were treated as "fake" for pushing different views on the scripture. Ultimately these groups help continue actual progressive values or atleast introduce ideas to the orthodox.
Let's just hope the reformist muslims won't get branded as unbelievers who poison the true islam which may end up with them being on a hit list.

It's lost a lot of ground, but even 50-60 years ago secularism was pretty accepted in a lot of Middle Eastern countries. I mean, shit, Iran elected a secular socialist until we kicked him out and put in an authoritarian religious leader who became unpopular and was kicked out by even more authoritarian religious zealots. Muhammad Abduh (1849-1905) promoted a rationalist school of Islamic thought influenced by Baha'i that is genuinely secular and modern - over a hundred years ago. He's one of my favorite figures in Muslim history. Modernist Salafism, before it was co-opted by the more-recognizable Wahhabist Salafism, was a pretty significant reform movement within Islam that's largely fallen out of popular favor since the early 1900s. Modernist Salafists wanted to open religious texts up to individual interpretation, instead of relying only on Imams to interpret the Qu'ran. There's an incredible amount of room for reform in Islam, and even though there's political weight dragging shit down, I'm optimistic that widespread religious reform will result from the era of extremist terrorism. Swing far enough to one extreme, and you pivot back towards the other eventually. Just gotta see how far Erdogan and ISIS and all those authoritarian chucklefucks get before it actually swings back.

I grew up in a christian fundie group who would regularly call moderate Christians "fake Christians". He may or may not be fake, but it's worth noting that moderates can often be labelled fakes by their political opponents.
