It just sort of hides the account, even after you wait the couple-of-weeks period after which the account is "deleted"

I know the onion is joking, but why are they making a joke video about something that already exists?

Nope, you can fully remove them. Also if you contact them and cite a part of the British data protection act. They MUST disclose all information they have on you.
It's still stored in the database, it's just not indexed to normal facebook users and only federal agents and the company can access it IIRC

I reactivated an account that I deactivated over a year ago. It's definitely longer than a couple of weeks.
