I think the P-51 has to be one of my favourite WW2-era planes, to be honest. Sweet engine sound!
One of my other favorites had to be the German Stuka, just the screaming of the plane is terrifying and so satisfying to hear.
The p-51 is a legend and easily one of my favorite planes.
its still hard to believe that the germans managed to create jets by the end of WW2. Man their technology was astounding.
This gets me sexually excited.
its still hard to believe that the germans managed to create jets by the end of WW2. Man their technology was astounding.
I thought the allies were working on one too? But the germans engine design was much much better.

Tailwheel aircraft are the only fixed wing I have flown, and they are a blast. I have flown an AT-6 Texan and my primary aircraft was an ACA Super Decathlon. It just requires a much different skillset than nosewheel aircraft. I would absolutely love to fly a P-51D. Their never exceed speed is incredible for a propeller aircraft.
I thought the allies were working on one too? But the germans engine design was much much better.
Both were. The germans were ahead, but their engines weren't perfect. They had a habit of catching fire.
its still hard to believe that the germans managed to create jets by the end of WW2. Man their technology was astounding.
The Allies had the first jet in service during 1944 with the Meteor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloster_Meteor).
mmm radials...
Absolute music...and people wonder why I prefer engines so much. RC P51s can sound pretty good too, I think. God damn, those fly-byes are fucking powerful, it gave me goosebumps. Such an incredible machine.
I love how you can hear cymbals in the background.
because it's taken right out of (at least the beginning is taken from there)

At first i was like "that's not the plane that's way too damn low" and then i soiled my pants.
The P-51: Cadillac of the Skies
ME262 was first. Also the Meteor sucked a big one, barely out-ran the propjobs in a straight line and didn't turn for shit.
First jet in service, i.e. being mass produced and used on the battlefield.
First jet in service, i.e. being mass produced and used on the battlefield.
I quoted the second line of the Wiki article you used to back up your erroneous claim to prove your claim was erroneous. The ME262 was the first jet fighter. The Meteor sucked too badly for Britain to bother putting it into use, the P51 and Spitfire could outperform it without issue, and ours wasn't ready until after the war was over. I'm sorry, but whatever jingoistic pride you may have does not change the fact that the ME262 was the first jet fighter. Just because the Brits were building one doesn't mean they had the first one. Prototypes don't count, only the ones that see combat, and the 262 saw combat first. Germany won that arms race fair and square. The history books do not lie. Now can we resume discussing the P51's sweet exhaust note?
I quoted the second line of the Wiki article you used to back up your erroneous claim to prove your claim was erroneous.
No, you proved that the ME262 was the first operational jet fighter, which I didn't dispute. The article clearly states that the Meteor was the first in service. If you want to prove that wrong then please provide some evidence. I was stating a piece of information that I believed to be factual in order to add to this conversation about WW2 jet fighters. At no point did I display any of this "jingoistic pride" just because it was a British aircraft. Perhaps you should take that piece of shrapnel out of your arse before you retort.
Except the P-51 can do it naturally, without the siren.
That sound is probably the supercharger on the Merlin. It probably isn't nearly as loud as the siren. Compare:

Read it yourself. If you're going to make a claim don't back it up with a source that refutes your claim in the second sentence of the entire article.

A P51 was at an airshow i went too, buzzed the crowd and a i almost jizzed my pants.
There is something eerie about warplanes being flown at airshows. These planes were used to kill, to instill fear into men, and here they are being used to do the exact opposite. It's just... eerie.
Both were. The germans were ahead, but their engines weren't perfect. They had a habit of catching fire.
German jet engines had the problem of overheating if the throttle was increased too much in short time. But they were absolutely devastating anti-bomber fighters, during the year 1944 (or was it year 1943?) at one pont they caused so terrifying amount of casualties amongst the bomber squadrons flying over Germany, that the allied high command was about to suspend all of the bombing runs over Germany. But then they started hitting the Ruhr's fuel production facilities which then limited the Me-262's operations.
