Your eyes did not deceive you - since the release of torches, I have had a curse placed on me which ensures I will NEVER find coal on the first day. Therefore, I never look for coal on the first day.

I always go look for coal the first day, and never find it, and then I proceed to die. When I return to my base the first thing I find is a huge coal vein. I hate that.

I always make a small hut then dig down diagonally. I usually find some coal before it gets too dark, and that allows me to keep digging. Using this method, I usually have sufficient amounts of coal and iron by the first day.

Why not to just have full contrast and brightness on monitor?
Of course I know you need torches for preventing monsters spawning, but that's really useful.

I never do this, I always find the most obscure places to put my houses, under sheets of ice, on top of trees, on top of a mountain, on top of a tree on a mountain, etc.
Then the next day, I search for coal, can't find any, get lost, die, delete the file, start a new game. Rinse and repeat.
I fucking suck.
