Glad to see it all worked out, but one case does not mean that every situation pans out like this. And if it is staged like people are saying then it's just propaganda which could be endangering people.
Why did he wake up with a loaded gun in his hand?
Smells fake to me. Guy wakes up with the gun already in his hands at 2:40 - even if he was awake, there was no motion to grab it from under the pillows. Either they're in such a shitty neighborhood that waking up to a firefight is a regular thing (as in weekly), or this was staged.

I don't know why he woke up with the gun, but I don't think this is staged at all. I have a Glock 19 within reach of me in bed at all times, so I can get to mine in a hurry but it looks like he woke up holding the thing like it's a security blanket (pun intended) Maybe something happened earlier that night that had them all on edge so he fell asleep with it, looks like he was watching netflix on his Ipad or something. I've had that happen before where something spooky is going on in the neighborhood so I'll chamber a round and reholster, but I'm not the kind of guy who clutches the thing like something is about to pop off any second, perhaps he was though.
Panic button and big house but no proper security system?

There's other suspicious stuff. The cameras seem remarkably well-positioned to capture everything, and everyone tends to stay within the frame. And why do they have cameras recording, but no alarms? Neither of those things would be enough on their own, but the combination certainly smells fishy.
Why did he wake up with a loaded gun in his hand?
I think its part of the traditional american sleeping garments.

Not exactly the best place to make use of a security system. Besides that, security systems don't do anything unless you have actual security personnel in the location to respond to an alarm, when my grandfather's house got robbed, it took 18 minutes for the police to respond, and he is only 6 city blocks away from the station.
Panic button and big house but no proper security system?
Almost as stupid as sleeping with a gun in your hand, or fucking climbing out of bed while resting your weight on your gun.

But still, if it were me, I would have an alarm to at least wake *me* up, so I can defend myself. There are still things that don't add up.

The bullet holes being a big factor in why I think it's legit, they didn't go punching holes in their house just to stage this and ontop of that the bullet holes through the windows would be hard to fake without actually shooting the window. Not to mention having this show up in the news probably would bring them under legal scrutiny. The camera thing doesn't surprise me. I mean, our family has talked about getting CCTV for awhile. But we've never even mentioned a security system, just not something we're interested in. Like, as far as I know security systems are expensive, you have to get a guy come out to the house and wire up all the doors and windows and even than if you don't arm the thing every night they don't really work. Maybe they had one and it just wasn't armed? Probably not, they likely just didn't have one but that's not suspicious to me. They're expensive and work off monthly memberships. CCTV and panic buttons don't. Likewise, I don't have an alarm system in my truck but I do have a dash cam. Is that suspicious? Getting an alarm installed in my truck would cost a few hundred dollars plus installation and why? So it beeps if someone breaks a window or forces the door? It's marginal benefit for the investment. The dashcam was less than $100 and is far more valuable to me in regards to having video evidence of accidents and shit like that. Same reason we wanted CCTV. It's way cheaper than an alarm system and we figure if someone wants to break into our house they have to force a door or break a window. We'd rather have video of someone say, breaking in when we're all at work and have that video to give to the police. The security system is an expensive investment in comparison. And as for the 'shots being well centered capturing the action' well, why is that suspicious? They're off frame for part of it. But besides that, I don't know anyone who says "Okay, let's install this camera in the place least likely to catch someone breaking into our house. Oh here this corner looks like a good place to point it." naturally they'd try to pick spots in the house with good coverage so it's not really strange. That's like me catching a shoplifter on camera, showing the evidence to the PD and than have them say "Wow, this shot is well centered and captured the theft. Looks staged." It's well centered because we put it in a place we know people would steal.

Besides, security systems shouldn't alert the police, it's there to warn the occupants, the people next door and if you can afford it, a security firm.
If you're to the point where you're literally waking up with a gun in your hand and can afford a pretty decent large home, CCTV and a fucking panic button you can afford a security system.
So it's their fault that they didn't buy a security system that they were the victims of a home invasion? Out of all the things to point out this seems like the most trivial. Once again that's like saying "You can afford a nice car and a nice stereo you could afford an alarm system." Would it be wise to have a security system? Yeah, probably but he is under no legal obligation to buy one to keep himself from being burglarized. And if this is from South Africa than a security system is kind of worthless. If it goes off, than what? Their police system is overwhelmed on any given night because South Africa is a horribly crime ridden country. So the security company calls the PD and than you wait for them to not show up for thirty minutes or more? If you're lucky the security company may respond directly but that's even more money.
Being in South Africa explains quite a bit of it. But still, if it were me, I would have an alarm to at least wake *me* up, so I can defend myself. Put something like that with an on switch, on all the entrances into your place, and hook it up to a joybuzzer. So if something is opened, you get a little zap in the ass.
Here's an explanation by the way.
I just think this is bullshit logic. Because now I see myself having to defend myself or my family from a home invasion and apparently everyone's first instinct is to sit in their chairs and say "Well, why didn't you have a security system? Come on man it's common sense." or even go as far as to call the video staged. Not everyone can afford an expensive ass security system and pay monthly for it. And you don't even know all the facts. Maybe they lived in a gated community, a lot of professionals working in South Africa live in fenced off blocks. Maybe they thought they didn't need one. But people still hop the fences all the time. It's bordering on victim blaming and I hate using that word because it's such a buzzword these days but really, they had CCTV and guns and that was enough to save them all from being from what I observed raped, robed and worse.

They are fucking idiots for not caring about security systems when they take the effort of installing cameras and sleeping with guns.
They are fucking idiots for not caring about security systems when they take the effort of installing cameras and sleeping with guns.
It's kind of the impression that people get when you focus so much on it. The guy sleeps with his gun, and she had one with her, but they don't take the effort of turning it on at night.

CCTV video, a news article, a video response and now you need a PD report. How are we supposed to get that? And why are you so positive it's fake in the face of all this evidence to the contrary? Holy shit. This is baffling to me.
why not call warrant officer Alwin Labans and ask him if it's real yourself, if you're saying that The Herald falsified a statement from an actual living officer http://www.saps.gov.za/newsroom/msspeechdetail.php?nid=4747
