As an animator at Disney, he brought to life iconic characters like Aladdin, Ariel from The Little Mermaid, and everyone's favorite furry grump, Beast from Beauty and the Beast. But after spending nearly four decades at the house of Mickey Mouse, Keane left in 2012 to explore new ways to bring animation to life. His first stop was at Motorola's (now Google's) Advanced Technology group, where he developed the interactive animated short Duet (accessible as part of the Spotlight Stories app). But his next experiment is even more exciting: drawing in virtual reality. That's the subject of a new short, Step Into the Page, created for the upcoming Future of Storytelling Summit.

The film, directed by Ashley Rodholm, shows how virtual reality allows Keane to finally bring his characters to life. "When you draw, you're expressing something that's real, visceral," he says in the short. "By making a line, it's sort of a seismograph of your soul." Instead of a paper and pencil, Keane draws life-sized versions of Ariel and Beast in the short with an HTC Vive headset and the 3D painting app Tilt Brush app (which is now owned by Google). And rather than just being static on a page, he's able to walk around his characters as if they were fully three-dimensional. Most impressively, the short, which was shot in a day, only documents Keane's second time using VR tech. There's still plenty of room for improvement.
I'm quite amazed at how passionate Keane is with his job, I mean it doesn't come as a surprise knowing that he does work for Disney, but that's something that I hope I can achieve when it comes to working a profession. It's so amazing too at how so deft and easy it appears for him to draw figures and make them move, it's almost second-nature to him especially at that point. I bet it only took him less than an hour to get used to the new VR tool.
Seeing that guy draw with VR with ease was amazing. [editline]10th September 2015[/editline] While I do think you still need some good skill to animate, I'll always think people like Glen are the true masters of animation. Having to do his job the way he did back then is legendary.
This guy is legendary, it's always great to see more people excited about VR.
I tried this demo at the HTC VR demo at NorthWest Festival and it was fucking badass! I can't wait til other people get to experience VR because it blew my god damn mind! Videos do it no service.
Holy shit this is awesome. I'd love to work in it.
No friggen way! I had no idea Mr. Keane was the son of the man who made the Family Circus. That's crazy. Love how it runs in the family. His daughter is a great artist as well. Go check out her work too. As for the technology, holy hell I'm surprised how well it works. I want to see some insane stuff done with it and would absolutely adore an animation done with it in the style of his VR short.
The joy in his face and the passion he expressed whiel talking of his art...man i love this guy
God, that's fucking wild. It looks so natural when he's moving around it.
I love people that talk passionate about their craft, it's so inspiring!
This video made me get more hyped about VR in 5 minutes than any and all video game previews, player testimonials and tech demos combined. I still think it is going to be an expensive side product for the many but fuck I want to try it out now.
