Shame the bad publicity thing didn't work with the WarZ...
I am so confused as to why devlopers do shitty things like this. Just what about being a game developer means you have a fragile ego and unwarrented self-importance?
I think it's less "exclusive to game devs" and more of a thing that is a part of certain kinds of people. Some folks can't take criticism very well, some don't want critics wrecking the chances they think their work has, but most of them aren't mad enough to screw with TotalBiscuit. The Garry's Incident guys, along with FUN Creators (total misnomer), were merely some of the rare few who thought that trying to mess with John Bain and Jim Sterling WOULDN'T result in career suicide.
except it kinda did
not really. the only reason anyone bought it was because of the prerelease videos.
Shame the bad publicity thing didn't work with the WarZ...
Something I recently wondered was if they ever actually intended to finish it. I paid thirty bux for that and only played it for a couple hours when it first came out. It's like they used that as a reason to quit making it and turn it into a five dollar game. Guess that will learn me.
I am so confused as to why devlopers do shitty things like this. Just what about being a game developer means you have a fragile ego and unwarrented self-importance?
What makes them that way? Simple, the same sort of "me vs. everyone" mentality that whiny/insecure (not all) artists and creators in all other fields share. For some reason, most likely a need to feel superior due to less visible psychological issues brought on by childhood/brain chemistry/whatever, creative fields in general attract a lot of drama queens and petulant children. These sorts of highly-unstable and opinion/criticism-sensitive people tend to flock to creative fields in an effort to be important and well-recognized, which can be (but frequently isn't) far easier to do in art than in more physical/logically-minded fields like, say, brain surgery. Nothing fuels personal insecurity and an inferiority complex quite like going into an "unrespected" (hah) creative field and getting told you're shit because you're exactly that, shit. People like Phil Fish, Sergei Titov and other notoriously crappy devs come strutting into the games industry like they're hot shit, expecting everyone to kneel and offer up praise for anything they create regardless of quality, because art. Problem is, shit doesn't work that way in the games industry like it sometimes does in general artwork, and no amount of artsy-ness will negate awful game design. Thus, from this mixture of insecure and lazy devs who want to be recognized for doing jack-shit, resulting crappy games and further-resulting audience backlash, you get the problem we started with: Screeching manchildren taking their ball and going home when they don't suddenly and effortlessly have thousands of lips attached to their pimply asses. If a dev even begins to show the smallest hint of this kind of attitude and lack of effort, I'd recommend either not paying them a cent or getting a refund, and then getting far away with some popcorn to watch the fireworks when their "masterpiece" tanks.
