http://www.lasvegasnow.com/news/i-team/george-knapp/i-team-special-report-deadly-dust#.VeHc384ygig.facebook It's an hour long, but it's damn interesting, damn scary, and damn crazy. The government has been trying to hide this for years, because it impacts our economy down here. Basically, the people of my college are heroes for getting this shit out there and are true altruists, and the government is getting in the way of absolutely everyone. I also suspect this natural asbestos may have caused horrific health problems for the hard-working outside workers in my family, including the the exasperation and resulting death of my grandfather at 44 years old. I'm trying to share this information with the people having breathing problems in my family and Nevadans in general. Oh, and the EPA has confirmed all the reports in the video.
Im about half way in, its really worth a watch
Really good investigative journalism. I hate when government/large industries interfere with science.
They use that 28 Days Later song a lot in this.
Really good investigative journalism. I hate when government/large industries interfere with science.
I was honestly surprised at the production level for this channel. I'm not saying the actual news from these guys are bad - in fact I've always found them to be pretty cozy and good to watch, but this is another level of organization and production. [editline]30th August 2015[/editline]
Really good investigative journalism. I hate when government/large industries interfere with science.
It's absolutely disgusting. I don't even know if they're looking at the legitimate risks of the reports - they're looking at how they can oppress it so they can continue marketing Vegas, expanding residences, and building highways.
another reason to move
Awh man, what the fuck. [editline]30th August 2015[/editline] I'm going to find a different, less naturally deadly nowhere to live in
Really good investigative journalism. I hate when government/large industries interfere with science.
You'd love this then.
another reason to move
The big problem before this was simply running out of water, which is going to get very expensive very quick. Now the government is trying to hide the fact that we're breathing in asbestos. Las Vegas is going to be a city for dead people.
Wow, that was a surprisingly good exposé for a local station. Thanks for posting, super interesting stuff!
Great documentary this is what real journalism should look like. I have to say though the first comment on the link it self was incredibly stupid though: "That's like blaming the the state for being too hot during the summer. It's Mother Nature not man made people." What an incredibly brilliant statement.
I have talked to people who live in that mindset - the mindset of just giving up and not bothering with anything, as if all is according to some super-natural plan and nothing is important.
You know what I can sympathize with somebody that says "fuck it all its all useless I can no longer force myself to care." What I can't do is sympathize with somebody that absolves the blame of parties that are obviously absolutely guilty. Furthermore to go out of your way to state that you do not give a damn is stupidity incarnate. If you are going to not give a shit you should do it right. On an unrelated note I decided to do my part in spreading the message further by posting it on voat.
That post-rock soundtrack was tops, except they re-used the same Godspeed You! Black Emperor song a bit much for me.
I generally enjoyed watching this local station after school because it was super "no frills" and nothing crazy sensationalist for the sake of attracting viewers. It was just the Las Vegas news. Even with this and the production value, it still speaks to the mentality of being the news and is completely fair. It's not hamming everything up with empty thrills - you actually gain something from watching it compared to, say, an investigative report from CNN. It feels the closest to reality.
