I've been re-watching some movies with my Dad over Christmas and we decided to watch The Matrix. I thought it would be interesting to watch the behind the scenes footage.

Bonus video: The Rooftop scene

This had to have been fun.
What's with the action countdown? Is it 1, 2, 3 in Japanese or something?
Also I fucking love the destructible walls and columns.
This was actually really cool to watch
The subway fight is one of the coolest things that have ever been on film

It's Cantonese, I think it's because a lot of the fight choreography is done by a group of Asians.
The behind the scenes of the Matrix movies are great to watch, especially since they did a lot of groundbreaking work.
Some of those punches and kicks are actually connecting, they must have been full of bruises after that.
The seriousness of the entire thing makes me feel thrilled oh wow

Don't they usually wear vests for stuff like this, though? To lower risk of broken ribs, etc.

Plus, it lets the actors go hard as a motherfucker during fightscenes, making them look more authentic, without completely trashing whoever the guy they're fighting and leaving them covered in sore bruises

Already mentioned but the breakable pillars and walls is just great. Adds so much weight to the punches.

It's a shame that now they'd probably just CGI all those breakable parts of the set.

This one is great too, the set gets absolutely trashed (Keanu even slipped on the rubble at one point :v: )
Still one of my favorite movies of all time
When Keanu is thrown into the wall by Elrond and hangs up side down it looks like he hurt himself for real.

I like hearing Keanu making fake gun noises as he's running through these scenes. :v:
what do the guns shoot exactly?
now THIS is how you're supposed to blend cgi with practical effects
what do the guns shoot exactly?
Usually powder based blanks to give an extra effect of the gun being fired
what do the guns shoot exactly?
They seem to be firing blanks, but the bullet holes in the walls are caused by explosives placed in the wall.

You'll love HK cinema by tenfold then, give John Wio's "Hard Boiled" or "The Killer" a watch.

Yup! The main guy in charge of the fight choreography was Yuen Woo-ping, he did the choreography for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and is a famous choreographer of Hong Kong cinema.
This is why the fight scenes in the Matrix are so good and most importantly CLEAR. You can easily tell what's going on because in Hong Kong fight choreography the camera isn't excessively zoomed in, shaking or swaying with their movements.

Absolutely, the actors in Hong Kong films actually know how to fight too. There's no camera tricks to make the hits look more believable because they already look very believable.
ya'll got me wanting to watch The Matrix Revisited again.

It's insane how much of a difference there is between Jackie Chan's HK movies and Hollywood movies. It's night and day.

Just blanks. They're 'Hollywood' Motion Picture Blanks that have larger flashes or puffs of smoke
Saving Private Ryan used them so much you can actually see that they're blanks or non live dummy rounds, scene depending, a lot of times. To completely ruin the movie forever, just look at all the rounds around Upham's neck. You can see every one of them either have no primer or have no primer and the hole filled
How the hell did they get the security guards in the lobby to get pumped full of bullet holes? When I see stuff like that in movies I always try to figure out how they do it.

Think called squibs

I'm guessing it's tiny electronically fired directional pyrotechnics with fake blood and dust

Have you really never heard of squibs? They've been in use in movies since the 50s.
