The bit about death is a bit nonsensical and overly optimistic imo. You can look at a descendant of the deceased and say you see parts of the deceased, but you can't look at two unrelated people and say "oh they both were like x so one lives on." Its the way that we define identity that makes it so difficult to apply to ourselves. It is ultimately up to human perception to determine identity. As unsatisfying as it is, identity is a matter of convention and like asking "what is the meaning of life" boils down to what each given individual thinks.
