BAE have taken the cloak off their adaptive camouflage system for armoured vehicles. Named Adaptiv, the current generation of the system can be used to mask the vehicle's IR (Infra red) signature, create a disguise, and be used as an IFF to help prevent friendly fire. It's like something out of a movie.
I was always wondering how they just suddenly disappeared to make it look like they were the trees themselves from the first thread on the topic. Now I know. This is some real awesome stuff.
Second largest employer in my state too. Hopefully I can get an internship there this year since they have at least 2 facilities in my town
I did work experience at a BAE office and made a circuit board and programmed it to make a bicycle light with different flashing speeds / patterns
My last name is Bae
This only changes the heat signature iirc, it doesn't disappear in visible light. Someone post meta-materials.
I've just got a few questions about the practicability of this system: 1. What military are we fighting that has the technology to be fooled by heat based target fooling? Are we planning on going to war with China any time soon? And 2. Is it also a protective armor?

Cool, since it's only one side it allows friendlies to still see it.
Can I preorder it from Amazon UK?

It would be funny if they disguised it say, "Definitely not a tank."
Was it this some Swedish and German engineers made?
Redundant modular design? Maybe I'm retarded, but if the modular design is redundant then what the fuck is the point of it being modular it's REDUNDANT
Redundant modular design? You'd still want modular to swap out the tiles that get fucked up from being shot at or otherwise destroyed.
How much weight does it add?
How much weight does it add?
http://www.baesystems-dsei2011.co.uk/News/Adaptiv You can watch the briefing there, he mentions that it is a true light-weight system (around 12 minute mark) but doesn't go into details. I suppose if they think its applicable to a helicopter, it must be fairly light?
My Vision is augmented.
Inb4 this is used as a hilarious riot control device to get protesters off vehicles
Inb4 this is used as a hilarious riot control device to get protesters off vehicles
Yeah, maybe if protestors were always looking through infra red goggles [editline]23rd September 2011[/editline]
This only changes the heat signature iirc, it doesn't disappear in visible light. Someone post meta-materials.
That's not what matters. It basically makes it so you can't fire any kind of modern missile at it- gravity, wind resistance, etc. will just make your shot miss, regardless if it's semi-active, active, or purely radar guided, or whatever , because those all work off of heat signatures. And if the vehicle moves? Tough luck, the shot will trash miserably. You'll also be pretty much unable to see something through an IR camera overall. Perspective example: remember that Call of Duty mission where you shot at people through a gunner position in an AC-130 gunship? That was an IR camera. Imagine if those troops were instead a large force of APCs or tanks rolling through a field- you wouldn't even be able to see them and suddenly you get word from base saying a huge assault was just mounted on local forces, including those same APCs and tanks you didn't see. Say there were jets present in that same assault- your jets wouldn't be able to put a dent in the enemy craft because your side's missiles won't even lock on. This technology will allow crazy things to happen on the battlefield and it will make for some very interesting successes once it gets mainstream and is further improved upon & improvised with by soldiers in the field and officers commanding those soldiers. It will save so many lives and make wars between modern armies that much quicker to end.
