More than a year ago, in October of 2010 I was a christian, but a christian living in doubt. I'd lost my grandmother to colon cancer, and I knew her to be, perhaps not a true atheist, but an opponent to God, who she couldn't believe had allowed the numerous atrocities of our world. The more I thought about it, the more it shook me. That this person I'd know or loved could ever be considered worthy of something as ugly as a Hell. But as easy as it was to feel angry at God, it wasn't as easy to let go of a lifetime of indoctrination and imagined safety when it meant stepping into a world of uncertainty, where the only promise was that one day I would cease to be. Then, on the first of November of that year, I was cruising this site, in this very video section, when someone posted a video by a Youtube user named Philhellenes, under the title "Science Saved My Soul". Simultaneously I was afraid of the video and infinitely curious, as it felt almost like it was speaking to me through its title. I relented, and began to feel the emotion and revelation that comes when your very life changes. The video had been beautiful, telling me, perhaps things I mostly knew concerning science, but from a perspective that cut right through to the very heart of things. It told me about the wonder of the Universe and the cruelty of religion, but that description doesn't do any of it justice. So inspired by this man, I looked up his channel. Within, I found what seemed like the young-atheist's re-education kit. "Why Scientists Don't Fear Hell". "How to Fight a God" "God, the Loving Psychopath", among so many others. Within this one man's channel, I learned enough about the truth in atheism and the baselessness of religion to cast off god with a smile. I went on to listen to Thunderf00t and the Amazing Atheist and Dawkins of course, Matt Dillahunty and The Living Dinosaur among others... ...but as inspiring as they all are, none inspired me as genuinely, with tears in my eyes, as Philhellenes. I feel as though I owe this man my life, and I doubt I'm the only one.
Congratulations. You have a free mind now, not bound by senseless beliefs.
If you like that video, I really think you'll like Evid3nc3: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA0C3C1D163BE880A&feature=plcp Evid3nc3 is a guy who was a devout Christian until 2004. His beliefs were challenged by a literary professor. In his video series he describes in detail how he became an Atheist.
