That was amazing. I'd love to know how he did it, especially being able to fool some of the best in the business.
I love this show, only seen a few acts, but it is exactly the kind of thing I want to watch.
I laughed so hard at the box, "NO".
Excellent.
When spread, the cards spell different things. He re-arranged them so that the edges would spell NINE, then he had OF in the next segment of cards, then the re-arranged the cards to spell DIAMONDS.
The edges of the cards are printed on and he re-arranges them to spell words.
That's what I think. 3:56 to see the end result of what I'm saying.
Arrangements: 2:50, 2:56, 3:15 to 3:40
love these guys
I think I know what's up. That box... is a time machine.
Pretty damn amazing.

Yeah but that's not enough to explain how. You can't just say "you arranged the deck right infront of our eyes somehow and made it work".
It's pretty obvious he was re-arranging things there but he did it very quickly and his sleight of hand is magnificent.
Imagine they picked the King of Clubs.
Where are.. almost all of the letters to spell that? If he fooled them, we don't really stand a chance of working it out.
He would make the coolest grandpa.
Man, Teller's gotten old.
Wow, this guy fooled them 2 times, with the trick and the box.
Penn & Teller have been doing this for a long time, they know their stuff

[sp]He's got diamonds, hearts, spades, and clubs all on one side of the cards. He gives the illusions that they are all blank cards if you were to go through them you'd see that those words spelt out on one side. He's got the placement of these memorized, and it takes him no time to separate it out. He also knows where the "of" is and separates that out as well. He spells out the number by flipping different letter cards and putting them in order. He's memorized the placement of all these letters, and he's arraigning them throughout the trick, but you wouldn't know it. Arranging the suit and "of" is easy, the number is hardest to pull off. I think he uses a bit of mentalism to get the number that would be easy to spell out, he kind of skips over seven, eight, and queen, and spends more time putting on the other numbers and also puts a pause in between nine and ten and jack. Surprisingly this is pretty effective when the audience isn't aware of it and Derren Brown uses this technique a good bit. I can't say for sure that he tries to force an easy card, but I think he does, and it would make sense because the less moves he makes, the more impressive the trick is.
You pretty much had it right, but it wouldn't make sense to spell out the suit or "of". It really only makes sense to spell out the card value.[/sp]
Oh god, go to 6:38 and see the failed highfive, it's so god damn hilarious

Well, we have the benefit of being able to re-watch as many times as desired, and also not having to make a quick guess.
For the record, he sells this trick now (or, rather, the cards and instructions necessary to demonstrate it), so I guess the secret's out.

I think this is pretty much the way he did it. Magicians that do a lot of card tricks are masters of rearranging a deck to get whatever card they want wherever they want it. Penn & Teller are especially good at it. This guy just has a different kind of deck is all. One thing that hasn't been mentioned yet that I noticed is that when he pulls the 3 cards out that says stuff, when he puts the un-used cards with the rest of the deck, he flips them over. that way when he spreads them out, you're seeing the other side, which has the digital type of series of shapes on one edge, to which you can make say anything, as long as you're good at rearranging a deck. The 3 cards that say something, I think, are also dividers. Meaning the cards above YOUR can spell out the digits, the cards before IS THE spell out of, the cards after CARD can spell out the suits. That's his markers to rearrange. As Penn said, Nothing in a trick is there for no reason
I think anyway
