A video about a game that took one person 13 years to make.

People who whine that all indies are lazy because they use retro graphics instead of beautiful artist-drawn multi-frame sprites should watch this.
great video, gonna give it a try

Just from the video, it already looks more detailed than the likes of Fez.
how charming
reminds me of my early game-maker days
"Maybe it doesn't work on a mac, but-"
HORRIBLE ;(
Kudos on completing his teenage-years project. Time to move on and do something more proficuous with the gathered skills, I hope.
I love how he made a video on his experience of making the game. It really shows how the completed game is a testament of his skill and hard work.
I just noticed, this was made by the same person who made the "Internet Story" video.
This is how I feel, except I don't know how to learn to properly program a game or even make one. So I just start projects with no real idea of what I'm doing and then I get myself in a huge programming hole where one problem just leads to the next, and I just want to make a simple game. Sometimes I cry at night because I always fail and there is nobody to help me and I don't know where to start to legitimately learn how to make a basic game.
This almost makes me want to continue the novel I began 8 years ago...Difference being that I absolutely suck at writing and this guy is good with making games.

Ambition guys, that's all it takes. It took this guy 13 years, and I can tell you right now that very first A is the only reason it came this far. He had the ambition to figure out what he was doing, and he had the ambition to actually finish it. Dreaming is nice but it isn't enough, you've got to want to fulfill those dreams, you've got to work for it. It's hard, but the only thing that will get you there is the drive to do so.
Almost isn't enough, and if it gets too hard you can't give up, no matter how impossible it may seem. Everything you've ever wanted is yours for the taking, waiting for you, if your willing to go for it.
Sorry for that rant, but I just had this conversation with someone else so I guess it's still in me a little bit. I just hate when people feel like giving up on something that means so much to them, it makes me sad because I know exactly how it feels, and I know that in the end only thing that truly holds you back is yourself.
Just go for it guys (or girls), you can only get better at the things you do.

unreal engine 4 uses "visual programming" and has game type presets which get you started in making a game really fast.
But you really aught to learn programming if you don't want to be limited. knowing how to program not only lets you implement something you want, it also makes you think differently, perhaps coming up with mechanics you wouldn't have conceived of without programming experience.
I've been working on a movie for about 2 years now, and only have a 3 minute pitch to show of it. I came into animation with literally no experience, and yet I'm still working hard on it. I really feel for this guy.

garrysmod
pull your hair out not understanding why everything errors
pour whole days into it
modify existing addons, again pull hair out
repeat
this is how i got started
one day it all just clicks and you're thinking like a programmer, but it'll still take time after that to feel comfortable with what you're doing and really learn it
I know C++ (a little familiar with C++11, but mostly the old standard), but I just get lost in projects because I have no idea how to organize them, and that is what bites me in the ass because it's a giant pain in the arse to debug.

I just wish I knew how to get to the point to "think like a programmer".
