Kinda putting off watching this since I can't help but feel he's completely lost his brain after that retarded COTY video.
I haven't read any of the books and don't watch the show either, so consider my opinion on the video invalid if you will. I have watched and read lord of this rings however and I agree with him that the "spirit" or to be more blunt, the agenda of both the book and movie version are very similar. I however wouldn't immediately come to the conclusion that this is a negative thing, if the movie or series adaptation of something just change the agenda from one thing to another I'd agree that it's not as true to the original. But who judges how good something is based on the source material? For me everything has to stand on it's own. I see how doing these changes would disappoint very hardcore fans of the source material. I also agree that it's a lame tactic to just take a previous established name and then not even have the intentions to follow the source material but use the name just to get attention from previous fans. That's shitty right, but if the end product is as good or better anyway I see no reason to really complain how the series compares to the books, just be that guy who say you like the book and not the series as much because you don't feel as if it's the same work. I see no wrong in being that guy.
I kinda agree with him about the spirit issue although I'm not nearly as passionate as him about whether or not it's actually a bad thing. The badass thing is kind of a non issue. I mean the books have their own fair share of badass worshiping although in hindsight, maybe it's more about the books making a statement since it's the characters that do the badass worshiping and IRL it's the audience that does the worshiping. I still criticize the show a lot though. Just more so because the writing has turned to shit. [sp]Also, Jaime being badass totally gets subverted when he gets his sword hand cut off. In Jaime's mind, being good with a sword is what defined who he was as a person. In his own words "I was that hand." After that event, he has really started to grow as a character and he's gotten a lot more interesting since.[/sp]
The main problem I have with the direction he's gone is that his central premise has shifted away from "this is bad because it doesn't work" to "this is bad because I don't like it". Don't get me wrong, he still makes plenty of good points. But "badass characters are bad because they're boring to me and therefor bad" or "this show is too glib and dark" aren't in and of themselves critiques. His point about the dragons on the other hand is a perfectly fine critique. I just wish he'd spend more time examining why things don't work and less time complaining about things not being what he wants.
I never really thought anyone in the show was badass, just shitty people because you need to be shitty in order to survive
Most of the fights are quite gritty and terse, and don't really feel like the character is a "badass".
I fucking love that the Hound just punches the shit out of people while swordfighting.
This video is just dumb at points. The show doesn't glorify violence or "badass" characters. Arya is depicted as a monster when she kills Trant. Dany is depicted as unjust and terrible when she kills those 163 slavers. Allister Thorne and his goons were given tragic death scenes. Joffery died frightened in his mothers arms. There are no badass deaths in this show. Every character who seeks out vengeance is either depicted as a terrible or stupid human being (Cersei/Oberyn) or deeply traumatized and damaged ( the Stark girls). The last ep also featured no action scenes outside of a very small one at the start, the rest was purely character interaction and development and most loved it. It isn't held up by the action scenes at all. EDIT: Look at the above video where Arya kills the guy on the ground. Can anyone honestly say the show is depicting that moment as badass and awesome? What a tool.

Definitely among the ones that weren't hyped up at least.
