blah blah thumbnail blah blah im not going to actually talk about the content in the video blah blah im going to complain about the same thing everyone complains about in this thread
blah blah blah there are just as much people like you compaining about others making fun of the thumbnail
Well to get at least a little discussion of the video going (and to reduce the chance of the thread derailing into just people going back and forth about the thumbnail), based on this review Johnny seems to view this game in a similar way he did with the original Metroid in that it's interesting to see where the series started although it overall hasn't aged too well. The next two games are a definite improvement.
Yeah Mother is... something. I couldn't really recommend it to anyone who isn't already a fan of the rest of the series, but you can definitely get away with playing this one after its sequels. The story is incredibly barebones, but what was there I actually liked a lot. There were some points that he missed about the ending, like [sp]how Giegue/Giygas is invading because it's implied that George stole the secrets to PSI from his race while captive and brought it to Earth, causing humans to become a threat in Giegue's eyes. The melodies that you go around collecting are a lullaby that Maria sang to Giegue while she was raising him. Giegue feels heavy emotional conflict over invading Maria's home planet. Repeatedly singing the lullaby to him causes him to become overwhelmed with warm memories of Maria and break down. He calls off the attack, unable to bring himself to go through with destroying the people of the mother that raised him.[/sp] Also I'm pretty sure the series is called "Mother" because the relationship between mother (or often just parent) and child (and often lack thereof) is a prominent theme that shows up many times over the course of the series. In addition to the John Lennon song thing.
I never knew how Mother's plot was basically Earthbound minus Pokey. It has the same goal of putting a song together but unlike Earthbound it seems to be the main plot instead of a sort of sidequest generator like it was in Earthbound. I loved Mother 3 and Earthbound but based on this I think I'll be fine passing on Mother 1.

While there's some cool factors with Mother 1, in the end it's as has been described; a novelty game for the sake of historical relevance or being a diehard fan rather than something the average person would probably go out of their way to play beyond curiosity's sake, especially given when its direct sequel essentially does what it tried to do but better in pretty much every way.

Why are his series named Johnny vs <game>? Kinda implies he struggles with them or something?
I come into every single Johnny thread this guy posts so I can read the comments. I never watch the video. And I laugh every single time. Thanks Johnny.
