SGtMark IV is trying to create a new type of AI for the Doom enemies in Brutal Doom where you can stealthily take down unsuspecting demons Far Cry 3 and Wolfenstein style. They're also going to have a line of sight so they can't randomly shoot that odd shotgun blast a mile away.
With the line of sight added in, this means that enemies can lose you if you run away and they will attempt to look for you instead of know where you are at all times.
kinda takes away from the ridiculous, over the top action that is brutal doom imo but im sure some people will like this
I actually think this would fit better in something like wolf 3d
But enemies only have like 8 sprite directions. It wouldn't fit or make sense at all.
I'm not talking about technical details. The nature of wolf 3d is that one you are breaking out of a nazi cell and the original games were all about stealth.

I wasn't responding to you, I was talking about brutal doom.
Seems interesting, but ruins the whole super duper over the top guns blazing action that BD improves on.
However I'm a sucker for stealth so this is right up my alley.
I actually don't mind this idea much. Having every single thing in the area instantly know where you are and then hunt you down 24/7 is old-school standard, but being able to lose them as they then branch out actually adds a little to the unpredictability. And there's absolutely nothing to stop players from simply going balls to the walls action anyway.
So this turns Brutal Doom into Brutal Snooze?
No, thank you, I would like a cup of rip and tear please.

fuck
The childish "fuck yourself" really needs to go.
Who the hell even thinks it's funny anymore?
Edit: the dumb ratings tell me that most people on Facepunch think memes are dumb but senseless profanity is cool.
Stay classy facepunch.

I've thought about making a Doom mod with stealth mechanics before, and then this happens.
I've thought about making a Doom mod based on Metroid before, and then Metroid Dreadnought happens.
Must everyone ape my ideas while they're still inside my head?
Doom isn't really doom with stealth. Classic shoot-em-up games don't have stealth

The world is just a fabrication of your thoughts. And if you die, the world dies with you. That´s why we have people who try to talk people out of their suicide attempts.
I think hes missing the point of why people enjoy Doom.
You can Stealth in Doom already. You can walk behind enemies without them realizing, but the game wasn't made for that.

I think you're missing the point of what he's accomplishing here.
He's taken an age old game and revamped it. And although he added stealth elements, they are optional.
As for the improved AI, I think that's pretty cool that they now have vision cones and stuff.

You haven't thought about making a Doom mod based off Capcom games like Ghosts n Goblins and arcade fantasy beat 'em up games have you? Cus if so, I have some bad news for you

I wouldn't really say it's improved.
Instead of homing in on you no matter where you are, they now seem to have Alzheimers and forget your last position as soon as you move out of their line of sight.
They also seem to be oblivious to what the other demons see or do.
And this will certainly also cause problems for maps where the mapper intended the demons to teleport by walking in a specifc direction.
It's a cool concept, but what keeps the action (and horror) up in old shooters is that activated enemies always know where you are. And they are always angry. They never stop hunting.
Makes Hideous Destructor mod (artificial difficulty x 1000) fucking terrifying when you lose sight of an enemy.

In the description, he said their alertness was intentionally toned down for the video example and they'd probably have a bit more tracking time after the player before going into search mode. If that's so, then such teleports should remain uninterrupted, since usually hidden chambers like those start warping monsters in when they get alerted somehow or another.
Regardless of whether this fits with doom or not, I could see this being really useful for other mods.
Also I just remembered there was something like this for quake, kinda. Except it was a horror mod and you had to use the dynamic shadows from darkplaces to hide and press up against walls so you could sneak up on enemies at the right time to backstab them which was the only way to kill them, and you died in one hit from mostly everything.
A survival horror mod like that for doom could actually be kinda cool, as long as it's not trying to mix with doom's style of gameplay.

Do you know the name of that Quake mod? that sounds really interesting.
You guys are complaining about him adding better A.I and a stealth mechanic you use at your own will?
I don't get it, if anything it just adds more options on how to play.
The iron sights and the dodge mechanic from the first builds are more questionable. But then again, they're completely optional.

PS: I highly increased the stealth rate factor before recording this video just to better show the mechanic. On the release version, you will need to stay out of their line of sight for around 25/30 seconds, so, stealth will not be always an option, and they will not look like dumbfucks who can't find you.

Yeah, all the links for that are dead. If there's anyone who still has the mod, a re-upload would be awesome.
I did find this though: http://www.moddb.com/mods/its
