Simple as I can get, that black murky void you drop into to get to Things Betwixt is like that because you're not supposed to know how you got their. The journey is murky, details are lost: seriously, it's literally dark murky skeleton water and you wake up looking passed out. The intro is literally in all aspects an intro I don't have anything against you OP
The intro to Dark Souls 2 is basically vague for the sake of being vague. The Dark Souls 1 intro is a concise telling of how the gods gained their power, how they defeated the dragons, and what the world has become since then. Dark Souls 2 spends 4 minutes saying "Yo, you're losing your memory", in that time Dark Souls 1 established an entire world, with 20 seconds to spare even.
Dark Souls' tutorial wasn't that great dude like christ get off it.
After playing through Dark Souls so many times I appreciate how quickly you can start Dark Souls II. Sure, it's not as well explained. But I don't need to fight the Asylum Demon for the billionth time.
Wall of Text
I think you're taking things a bit too seriously here. Also they're old Firekeepers, not Red Witches. Basic bit of lore there.
It's not vague for the sake of being vague. The vagueness is there because that is literally a part of the motive for those who actually meet the 3 Red Witches in Things Betwixt. The Red Witches literally tell you "All people come here for the same reason To break the curse" and they assume that "You're no different". It hammers into you that your memory is slowly fading. The entire intro (basically the parts around character creation as well) does this, its a literal motif in the beginning of the game. Through out the entire intro that is what is basically implied. The intro even goes forth to tell you to head towards Drangleic "because that is your fate" blah blah blah motif garbage that you see through out the game. Vague for the sake of Vagueness? No, its vague because it has to be vague. It's an intro told mostly from your/player character/visitor to Things Betwixt perspective. It only makes sense if its vague And most of the "vague" details mean fuck all. Honestly in the context of that intro none of that shit is supposed to mean anything besides "I'm losing my memory" You could argue that the human effigy was the last thing stopping you from going full hollow and forgetting yourself Neither is it even trying to set up the world. You're accusing the DS2's intro for something it didn't even attempt to do and didn't need to do. I'm not going to partake in this ridiculous "Length of the intro" conversation because its stupid. It's a cinematic intro that you can skip? Why do I care as long as its not an obscene length of time. What am I supposed to compare besides "DS1 built up the foundation of the world in 20 seconds"? Opposed to what? "DS2 did not try and build up the foundation of Drangleic's kingdom in 20 seconds"? Or what exactly, throw me a bone? Better yet why does it even matter?
Dark Souls 2's intro spent it's entire duration focusing on an incredibly minor part of it's own story. Even the whole 'finding a cure for the curse' thing just disappears for 90% of the game, and the losing your memory thing only appears for Lucatiel who you see three times in the game. Dark Souls 2 is absolutely vague for the sake of vagueness, and it extends to the rest of the game too. Your opening objective in Dark Souls is to ring the Bell of Awakening, given to you by Oscar. The Crestfallen Warrior then tells you there are actually two bells, and he tells you exactly where to find them, The Undead Church and Blighttown. Your opening objective in Dark Souls 2 is to meet Vendrick. You're not told how to do this, instead you're told to kill the Great Ones because your soul is "too pallid". You're also not told what the Great Ones are or where to find them. Also, don't use quotations for things I didn't say. My point is Dark Souls 2 took longer than Dark Souls to say essentially nothing in comparison. The gods, the world, and the dragons are a constant theme in Dark Souls and everything shown in the intro is relevant throughout the game. Losing your memory is an incredibly minor part of Dark Souls 2 and it isn't even until the DLC that it's even relevant, which is leagues better than the main game.
Really, the main difference between the first 15 minutes is that Dark Souls 2 expects most of its player base to know the mechanics of a Souls game, so it skips all the pleasantries and just plops you right in. It expects you know about the addictive "die and try" core principle. It expects that you have some vague idea on how to manage your inventory and mess with other basic mechanics. It expects that you know some of the key details of its world and lore, so it doesn't bother explaining it. It would rather explain the story of the game itself rather than the world in the game. The latter being a very controversial topic in the Souls community. And honestly, these expectations are safe ones to make, given how much coverage Dark Souls had by various articles and videos leading up to Dark Souls 2. Even if Dark Souls 2 was your first Souls game, chances are, you would've had some idea about how the game feels and plays through all the gameplay footage, let's plays, and lore videos about it. The only way to not know is to be completely blind to a Souls game just before the release of Dark Souls 2. I'm in no way saying one game is better than the other, as I think both games are pretty equal. Well, despite the overall better level design in the first game.
This guy is literally as bad as the Game Theory dude. The name Majula means "Onward" in like Malaysian as in "Move onward to find a cure for the curse" in the context of the game In which the actual NPC in game tells you to "Seek larger souls", "Seek misery", "Go on, and see the King.", etc, etc, etc. Which sticks to the whole theme of you going hollow if you literally have nothing to do/no purpose in life. And I'm pretty sure Things Betwixt means between "Life and Death" which connects to(Just a guess) not only the intro as you fall through a void just to get their but to the player character who is literally between life and death. Not to mention its over all a place of transitioning I don't know why he had to act like the names are there just to be "Cool". They have about as much meaning as the some of the names in DS1. The guy in the video seems to be trying to sound just as profound as he viewed the intro to be. I'm pretty sure the Intro is basically saying your mind is wasting away because you've been branded and you'll eventually become hollow. Seriously its literally a woman being washed away with emphasis on her face meanwhile the actual dialogue talks about how you won't care about your "Past, Present, Future, And the whole "Who is the woman thing is dumb". People complained about this intro for forcing a backstory on you when in fact it opens up leeway to your rp shit just like DS1 did. She could be your wife or you can be the mother and child. Shit that might not even be you. The intro is so generic in the context of the game especially when all the minor enemies in things betwixt "hollow travelers" are dressed just like you before you actually meet the Red Witches or w.e.(I'm pretty sure they're supposed to represent the fates but I'm retarded so don't trust me). Basically that shit doesn't really matter, the intro basically states that you're here to find a cure and that's all that matters. It's not trying to be profound or vague and its not even specifically applicable to you. Fuck, you aren't even supposed to know specifics. The intro outright said you don't know your past or present and you're seeking to cure that issue. The beginning of the game actually even hints extremely hard at your super zombie Alzheimer with shit like "Try to recall your own name", "It's a Human Effigy, Take a Closer Look, Who do you think its supposed to be, Think back deep into your past" Its the main reason humanity is replaced with Human Effigies. Because an "Effigy" is a sculpture or model of a person. The Red Witches give you an actual Effigy "of you" and it leads to Chara creation. Simple as I can get, that black murky void you drop into to get to Things Betwixt is like that because you're not supposed to know how you got their. The journey is murky, details are lost: seriously, it's literally dark murky skeleton water and you wake up looking passed out. The intro is literally in all aspects an intro I don't have anything against you OP Also this guy needs to be specific with his complaints in the first part of the video. He's leaving out details that he should actually include in his 12 minute long planned video.
I posted this because previous videos by this dude were good and I found this one interesting too (haven't played DS1/2), and he doesn't get many views so take that as you will :vs:
