I got the new DOOM during the fall sale and thought I'd spend maybe 3 hours with it and never touch it again. I have 22 hours in it and can't get enough demon slayin'.
I remember everyone calling bets on this game sucking.
You can thank the first E3 gameplay showcase for that.
You can thank the first E3 gameplay showcase for that.
The multiplayer alpha/beta didn't help much either
You can thank the first E3 gameplay showcase for that.
What was wrong with it, exactly?
What was wrong with it, exactly?
Played with a controller, looked horribly scripted and slow paced.
holy shit, /noclip's Patreon makes him twenty thousand a month. That's fucking wild. Nice to see that the amount of effort going into this is also getting paid handsomely.
Played with a controller, looked horribly scripted and slow paced.
Anyone with any sense could tell he could go really fast if he wanted to though. It doesn't play well on a large stage though. That said, glad Danny is keeping up quality in video games. Would've loved to be a camera op on this thing.

aw yeah, juicy development footage! can't get enough of those these days, always interesting to see what was before what's now. DOOM 2k16 is probably one of my top favourite games in a long-ass time.
The multiplayer alpha/beta didn't help much either
easily one of the worst fps betas ive ever played. It makes CoD look amazing because it manages to strip out the fluidity of even that.
I've never been so hyped for a youtube documentary before. This looks like a hell of a great time.
I want that Doomguy statue at 1:57 so bad. I was kinda looking forward to the "Hell on Earth" Doom that never was, but the Doom we got was beyond awesome.
Where's the flying through walls part?
You can thank the first E3 gameplay showcase for that.
I didn't care for it and thought it sucked too until I saw this: Then I got extremely interested, waited for some reviews and videos to come out and bought it. No regrets, easily one of the best games this year.
Besides the E3 gameplay, we didn't really see any true gameplay until maybe a week before launch. And speaking of launch, they withheld launch copies, which was a huge red flag.
that and the fact that the multiplayer beta was such a shitshow that all hope was lost for it.
This game has one of the best soundtracks ever. Mick Gordon is a fucking genius.
I first expected DOOM to suck because the original glory kills shown in the E3 2015 gameplay were so long and tedious. It looked like it was trying to ape Brutal DOOM more than anything (which to be honest, I'm not really a fan of Brutal DOOM). But, they toned it back in the final game, and on Nightmare, they're practically required and enforce a great high risk/reward scenario, so I actually really ended up liking them. Just wish I could say the same about the utterly generic multiplayer. But hey, at least SnapMap is getting a bit better.
Watching this finally got me to try the DOOM demo out on Steam. I wish I had the full game now, but it's $60.

DOOM 2016 is pretty much the rare triple-A exception to the rule that gives the middle finger to all expectations. It ditched the modern shooter setup unapologetically without being "NO COVER ALL MAN" braggart about it like Serious Sam 3, and while the campaign wasn't perfect, it was really well designed. The fact that it hit a major mainstream success speaks volumes about how word of mouth and people being worn out by modern shooters can play a major part. I just hope that multiplayer gets more updates to fix some of its inherent flaws, considering Id seems ready and willing to almost rework entire elements of the game if they feel it necessary.
I kinda like the multiplayer, but the loadouts are indeed lame, and the demon runes are op as fuck.
Everyone spamming rocket launchers doesnt help either, especially in tiny maps.
Am I the only one who thoroughly enjoys the multiplayer? Don't get me wrong, it ain't perfect, but there's still plenty of things I like about. For instance, there's still a good degree of map control due to the various power-ups found in the maps (though the demon rune spawning in 1 of 3 spots randomly with little warning is pretty shitty, I'll admit), there's a very good TTK (people can take plenty of shots, but not to the extent that they become bullet sponges), there's plenty of fun gamemodes, with some of them putting new twists on popular modes from previous games, such as Warpath (KOTH, but the "Hill" moves), and Exodus (1CTF, but the flag spawnpoint and bases move), and while there could be better movement options, the basic mechanics overall I think feel pretty good. Also, in terms of weapon balance, it's gotten a lot better since release, since especially that the Chaingun and Rocket Launcher both got significant nerfs, so now there's people with a variety of different loadouts (so the situation isn't really like what SpaceGhost is saying). Probably the only item that I think is OP at the moment is the Kinetic Mine. Plus, I've got to give props to id for taking step to not split up the community by making it so anyone can play the DLC maps as long as someone in the lobby has purchased them. I guess as well that it's kinda surprising that I like the Multiplayer this much, because I'm usually not into multiplayer games. For example, I recently tried to get into Titanfall 2, and while I enjoy some parts of the multiplayer (btw I really enjoyed the campaign), I hated the low TTK, and I felt the maps didn't have much room for wall-running. Also, for a more appropriate comparison, I tried to get into the new Unreal Tournament, and while I like where it's going, it just doesn't feel "right" to me (though that's probably to be expected for an alpha). Overall, the new DOOM's multiplayer is helping quench my thirst for arena-shooters right now. Because I'm waiting for the new UT to get into a better state, and all that everyone plays in Quake Live is Clan Arena.

It just doesn't feel like what I'd expect "DOOM" to feel like in a multiplayer setting. Feels closer to something like Halo, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but again, not what I was really expecting or wanted. The TTK and map designs (barring demon runes) are pretty nice though, I'll give you that. Honestly, I'm actually sort of excited for the recent changes to SnapMap, because it might essentially allow for full on campaigns that can also be co-op. I'm also with you on the new UT, though I think it's insanely fun already.
People give him too much credit. And I'm not just talking about his metal and electronic tracks either.
Well I have never played Halo in my life so...
