To me Diablo 3 is trying too hard to be...Stylish? I can't really express it properly, but I know it kind of misses the point of what made Diablo 1 and 2's atmosphere so great.

Cartoony shapes and less juxtaposition. Diablo has always had a tonne of colours (poison nova anyone?), but most of the time it was very dark (making the colour explosions even more accentuated). However the biggest changes are the shapes, that's what makes it look cartoony, the exaggerated shapes (apparently Blizzard has to do everything like WoW now, also because Blizz North is gone, so many of the original devs are gone as well).
