I absolutely loved Battlefront 2. I wasted so much time on Galactic Conquest and space battles over and over again on single player. I'm really surprised that no other game has nailed space battles like Classic Battlefront II did. It felt so realistic to fly out of your hangar in a ship, do some fighting, then land in theirs and start destroying their defenses from the inside. It's such a shame the PC port is so clunky. Fuck EA.
Battlefront was such a hard game to play for me. I admired coop like Unreal and Serious Sam, but that was never about mass team play. That was at best 6 players romping against a mass army. and then here is BF and all my run and gun tactic made me the worst player ever. But it was still so unique because having that many players was actually still pretty exciting. It's such an actual proper war where you have to work and think as a hivemind.
To me it felt like a fun space themed alternative to Battlefield 2.
I remember loving this as a kid, I'd play it for hours. But trying to play it today, I can really only get an hour or so of enjoyment out of it. I don't think it's the age of the game, I still play the the Dark Forces and Jedi Knight series fine. Maybe SP games just hold up better. If someone were to remake this but on a modern standards, smarter AI, smother movement and all that, it would probably be amazing.
Most of the game is fantastic, and the graphics still look pretty adequate. But the gameplay, physics, controls etc. are quite clunky compared to nowadays. So yeah, when people say "just play battlefront 2005 instead of paying attention to what EA is doing" it doesn't do much for me even though i probably clocked a thousand hours off it back in the day.
I still play a bot match every once in a while just to mow down some rebel scum on Hoth. It feels like playing with toy soldiers in a way. I never played it to get a balanced and competitive experience. To me, it's just a fun sandbox game. The new game is kinda trying to do both and in doing so it fails to do either one of them right. For example, it's hard to make a game balanced when you add building sized vehicles to the mix. It's also hard to have a fun sandbox experience when said vehicles are on rails. No one will ever be completely satisfied with the new games because everyone has different expectations.
I remember buying the first Star Wars Battlefront for Playstation 2 and playing it all the time when I could, to this day it is probably still the one single shooter I have clocked the most hours in, and the one game I played the most with my friends in splitscreen, even my dad thought the game was fun to play once in a while despite not being a Star Wars fan at all. I never managed to play the second game until like a few years back when I got it in a Star Wars game bundle, I would wish I had been there when the multiplayer had an active player base.

Speaking of characters with personality: [sp]I died at "Jango Fett's here, and he brought his head!"[/sp] The others also have golden lines: Droids Rebels Imperials
So, uhh... Angels Fall First is pretty cool. It's not so polished since it's on Early Access, but definitely something to keep an eye on if you crave a Battlefront successor. It has both ground and space battles with capital ships and a commander if you liked that on the old Battlefield games. It's a bit confusing at first and it looks dated, but if you can look past that, it really feels like a passion project from Battlefield/Battlefront fans.
Battlefront II was the 2005 Planetside 2
Gods I'd love a spiritual successor to both BF2 and PS2. Something in between in terms of scale while maintaining how glorious the chaos of battle can be.

That kid grew up faster than we did!" "What's the emperor doing all the way out here? On second thought, who cares? Kill him!"[/sp] :v: I didn't play Battlefront 2, until I got it in a Disney Humble Bundle and then the obvious console port smell hit me. There's definitely jank but the overall package still has a lot of good quality content. My actual jam back then was Battlefront 1, which I extra set up Gamespy for. I remember that game having much less of the console stink on it but who knows, I also didn't remember Republic Commando being an Xbox port.
