Fuck, I almost thought the title said Half-Life 3 Trailer.
Hasn't everyone seen this? [editline].[/editline] yeah, just rate me dumb without any reason :downs:
The game must have looked stunning to many people in 2003.
The skybox at 0:45 look pretty sexy.
The skybox at 0:45 look pretty sexy.
Yeah I thought so too, wonder why they cut it
I miss the old days of Half-Life, back when it was leaked in 2003 and we spent ages finding out about everything in it. Now there's nothing left to figure out.
and we never knew why they didn't add in the hydra's.
I remember seeing this and being fucking amazed. Half-Life 2 still holds up.
HL2 looks better than a lot of games even today.
HL2 looks better than a lot of games even today.
Not just looks, but also feels better.
Looked way better back then... 3D window models and so on...
Yes we do. I believe Gabe said that it was very hard to code the Hydra, and it didn't fit into the storyline.
Not exactly. A dev said the very main reason they didn't take time to code the hydra and find a place for it in the storyline was because it wasn't a fun enemy, and though it was amazing to see it impale other npcs, it was too fast for the play to avoid it, mainly because it's just a narrow object flying towards the player. So it was more of a gameplay issue. Also, the textures were horrendous, have you seen the original fast zombie model and texture ? It was pretty fugly.
HL2 looks better than a lot of games even today.
The face animations are better than most games today.
and we never knew why they didn't add in the hydra's.
Like Ganerumo said, it was cut due to gameplay issues, the same dev who explained why it wasn't a fun foe also explained and actually showed how silly it is when attacking. Due to how quick it striked and how small it's striking area is, combined with the semi-transparent blue skin it has, you struggled to see when it was attacking you because it was just a small flash of blue which was either the spike or the club end of the hydra. The hydra would work as a cinematic foe, much like the combine advisers but that's about it, head to head with the player its unbalanced and unfitting, it would be nice if it did come back as a cinematic foe in next game, it such an interesting concept to just leave rotting under a rock.
sometimes, i think what if valve kept the orignal story line? what would episode 1 and 2 would become and what's going to be the outcome of it. those were the days.
Aww yeah, traptown was the best.
The Source Engine still looks good even after all these years.
It is starting to show it's age now though.
There are definitely a few features that need to be in the Source engine to keep it up. Such as more dynamic lighting and shadows.
It is starting to show it's age now though.
Indeed.. Take TF2 for example, the physics and the gameplay are really easy/cheap/simple... Or maybe I'm just too familiar with the physics of the game, but anyway.
It is starting to show it's age now though.
Actually if you take the source engine and slap some unreal engine 3 textures on it, it looks amazing. I don't have the pictures, so I'll just rely on anyone who has them. Valve preferred developing physics, stability and flexibility rather than a pretty engine that is a pain to mod.
I still wish they included the Hydra. Could have been a really cool enemy.
Wow, Source has aged incredibly well.
I still have the bik file that came with some magazine
You, converter, NOW!
The game must have looked stunning to many people in 2003.
It still doesn't look half bad now, to be honest
I have every last map in this trailer all fixed up and working in my playable beta. [editline]4th December 2011[/editline]
The 3d window models were just there for the trailer and beta footage. Also, the textures were horrendous, have you seen the original fast zombie model and texture ? It was pretty fugly.
It had a pretty fucking scary face though. But yeah, textures are ass.
Aww yeah, traptown was the best.
Did anyone else try to reenact every single thing the player did in that video while playing the beta?
I miss 2003 and 2004.
I still think the Source engine in its beta status looks nicer then the current. It has a different shine to it. Maybe a bit dirty, but looks sort of better in my opinion. For a comparison, the HL2 graphics we have now feel like their sort of "raw food" that you can actually eat as it is. HL2 beta feels like that same raw food, only cooked, and better. It does has its downsides like the textures, but thats because they probably werent even finished.
Source will always be quite a superior engine compared to current technology in my opinion. The biggest reason is due to the compatibility and ease of modding. It made a career like Garry's possible because VALVe didn't want an overly complicated engine that was hard to maneuver. It's very clean and well put together, and even after almost a decade it hasn't shown its age as much as other engines. As much as I love Bethesda's games you can really take both the Source engine and compare it to Gamebryo (and their newest one which I don't remember the name) and can always point to Source and say it's the more rounded and stable engine. I think in Half-Life 3 we'll see Source again, but it'll be a much more updated and heavily modified version of the original. I think VALVe will want to stick with what they know, but do what they can to make the most of what they already have.
