[sp]They seemed more confused without it. Scary.[/sp]
I couldn't help but stare at gorilla ass
Shame a walrus wasn't one of the animals.
The one at 1:03 seems to actually clean the mirror! Nature truly is amazing.
Seems to me like the chimpanzee's actually realized they were looking at themselves?
Seems to me like the chimpanzee's actually realized they were looking at themselves?
Don't quote me on this but I've read that there's been tests done with animals and mirrors, where they would put some sort of markings on them on their back where they can't usually see. chimps and dolphins after they had markings put on them would quite regularly go to the mirror to see themselves and see what is on their back.
Jaguars sound terrifying
I like how the gorilla just ran out of the way when he charged towards the mirror to dodge the impending "attack"
"Although the wilds have since calmed me, I know always that I am a beast. This I have known ever since I stretched out my fingers to the thing within that great gilded frame; stretched out my fingers and touched a cold and unyielding surface of polished stone."
seems like the monkeys slowly figure out that it's a reflection and the elephant automatically knows it's a reflection. When my dog was a puppy he used to run into a wall sized mirror and bark at his reflection until he realized it was just that.
Seems to me like the chimpanzee's actually realized they were looking at themselves?
Yes, chimpanzees after a while pass the mirror test. Elephants and gorillas are iffy on it from what I recall.

While a lot of animals (like dogs) will eventually realize that the mirror is not another animal, only higher primates (like humans and other apes), corvids (like crows and magpies) , elephants, and dolphins (including orcas) realize that they're just seeing their own reflection. It''s called the mirror test, and it used to be a test of higher brain cognition before scientists realized that it was extremely biased towards sight based animals. It's been hypothesized that the reason dogs don't pass is because they don't recognize other dogs (or even humans) primarily by sight, but by smell.
I wonder if they have tried this out in different habitats. I would love to see it in a North American forest or something.
The cats were just the best. Adorable as fuck animals. Especially when he jumped off the top of the mirror then sat at the bottom staring in to it.
Now to look at the youtube comments to find the inevitable complaints of animal cruelty. Wish me luck! [EDIT] Found some good ones: Faith in humanity restored.
This is why monoliths are matte black.

[EDIT] Found some good ones: [comments] Faith in humanity restored.
I really don't think it's all that cruel when it's rather equivalent to pulling mind-boggling but harmless pranks/illusions/whatever on other people (e.g. pretending to be a old man who can somehow dance like Michael Jackson even though many wouldn't expect an elderly man to be agile like that). I mean, honestly, neither of those sound particularly cruel.
the only part i thought was lame was when the bird flew into the mirror cos it might have hurt itself but i wouldnt call the filmmen purposely cruel [editline]7th June 2015[/editline]
"Although the wilds have since calmed me, I know always that I am a beast. [editline]7th June 2015[/editline] Ahah! i went and found my book. totally fucking is. The Outsider. Rad story.
my favourite is the hairless monkey rubbing something on the mirror at 1:04
Lol at the animal trying to wash itself in the mirror.
aw man don't fuck with gorillas
This guy's channel has like 69 videos like this. This is my favorite one, it seems like the chimp's brain is melting when he looks in the mirror! I realized that I posted the wrong one, it's actually this one where the chimp sits in front of the mirror screaming at himself at about 4:30 Also here, have a silverback wielding a random branch going completely apeshit. Chimpanzees have odd asses.

Rad story.
Exactly, that's what I was going for. A jarring insight into one's true nature, having seen something terrifying in front of you only to reach out and realise that it is, in fact, a reflection of yourself.
Exposed teeth is how chimps show anger/intimidation, I think
With both sets, yes, but apparently just showing the lower set is a sign of happiness amongst chimps.
someone animals seem to come back for the mirror
With both sets, yes, but apparently just showing the lower set is a sign of happiness amongst chimps.
Which is weird, because for humans only showing the lower teeth is the aggressive gesture and showing the upper is a grin. :v:
