Absolutely incredible modding effort. Installation instructions can be found here
Oh shit, this is done now?
I Just played through up to it's end just a month or two ago. I was so disappointed to find it ended after assualt on the control room.
I am so hyped.
I think that it should be noted that this runs in the ORIGINAL HALO 1 ENGINE, not a remake. Truly astonishing that these guys were able to do this with a 16 year old video game.
It's pretty well made, I've only gotten to the "Two Betrayals" mission and man... A lot of the new weapons and enemies really make it fun and challenging. It's great at what it does, even for an old engine like Halo 1. I do recommend checking it out.
So what does this mod exactly do? Recreate the campaign in the engine with better graphics? Or does it have more? A little confused.

Looks like its graphical upgrade, but also adds weapons and enemies that weren't in the original game. As well as fixes 60 fps support in animations, as the original didn't support it 100%.

It also extends some levels and adds a noble tier difficulty above legendary with more brutal AI but with overall less enemies than the legendary campaign. New vehicles too, its just the halo remaster 343 didn't give us.
honestly the biggest thing about this for me was being able to actually play at 60fps, it works outside of this mod too so it'll work everywhere, and unlike MCC, interpolation isn't capped, you can play at 144fps if you really want, and also unlike MCC, cutscenes are interpolated aswell

Halo fans:
What would you say about this mod to somebody who has never played Halo before? Is this like a GMDX for Deus Ex situation where you'd say "Definitely play the game with this mod, even if you've never played the vanilla game before"? Or is it like a Bethbryo game situation where you'd say try not to play with gameplay changing mods first?

the latter imo
was level 1 always this long or have they added to the missions themselves too?

to an extent. it utilizes Open Sauce, something that wasn't done by them (actually came after some of the early SPV mods which werent so ambitious)
was level 1 always this long or have they added to the missions themselves too?
theyve added considerable amounts of new areas
my own thoughts of this mod are that they desired too much to take their liberties and make fundamental changes to the game, without considering well enough the implications of what some of those changes do to the gunplay and pacing.
i've seen a bunch of spv3 gameplay but only played the first level myself. and when i mean "considered well" i'm seconding what others have said about the lead developer having a huge hardon for making the game in his own image and thinking he can do better. my issue is that he doesnt seem to understand why the choices bungie made work for halo.
unfortunately it felt like the first level was never going to fucking end, and the weapon balancing was not very good both in the context of certain firefights and in the context of the sandbox as a whole. perhaps i just need to play more to get the broader picture, so i'll have to download this now that the full thing is out.
is the game on legendary by default? I clicked "continue" when I first booted up the game, and it skipped the tutorial after chief wakes up, but it does feel a little too easy to be legendary
Where can I buy Halo CE? Preferably via (legal) download
Where can I buy Halo CE? Preferably via (legal) download
you should be able to buy cd keys online
Where can I buy Halo CE? Preferably via (legal) download
You can download Custom Edition on Halomaps.org, but you need a legit cd key, which you can get on amazon, but it will be a physical cd that comes with it since no one sells it digitally (thanks MS)
Halo CE is also included in the installer for SPV3 just in case you don't have it. You still need a CD key of course.
In my youth I purchased 7 separate physical copies of Halo: Combat Evolved for PC because I kept getting viruses + scratched CD's + not realizing I could re-use keys :v:
if you'd like one PM me, first come first served

Play the original first

Try vanilla before you add sprinkles~
(though you can install opensauce to get some limited engine improvements which result in a much better experience imo)

Play vanilla first. IMO, the gameplay has aged fairly well, so it doesn't need crazy updates to be playable.
Just note that this game was a fairly direct port from the original Xbox. It will work at 60 fps, but all animations are still locked to 30 fps. Also some shaders didn't work correctly without a mod. I can't remember if there was a patch for both issues.
Playing it how it was originally makes you really appreciate the origins of the series. And if your discussing it with someone or passing judgement on it, its good to know the original is the version most people talk about.

You can get 60fps (or even 144fps) animation with this
It enables interpolation
You got to use chimera_interpolate 9 in console to enabled it
The DLL goes into Halo CE/Controls/
Also, suggest HAC2 for FOV settings and in game map downloading
You can find the single player maps for Custom Edition (Along with Universal UI for loading them and other custom SP content) on Halomaps.org
Holy crap SPv3 looks absolutely amazing with the interpolation turned on and framerate set to 144hz.
Holy fuck the machine gun thing is ugly. All the other models are really nice but then the machine gun shows up and it's a low poly, horribly textured, poorly designed, unappealing mess riddled with UV errors and awful animations
what the hell were the thinking

sprint is also awful

They were thinking they could make a better game then Bungie :v:
Sentinel that's a jab at amateurs who do this as a hobby thinking they can complete with 200+ studio veterans
sprint is also awful
if you run forward and jump, and whilst in the air press the sprint key, your character stops moving and instantly falls to the ground before starting to sprint :v:
sprint is also awful
Imo Sprint probably shouldn't have been implemented, it seems like just a big hack.
I don't agree with all their design changes (like extending some levels so much) and the art is kind of inconsistent with the level detail but it's nice to have something like this for a new halo experience.
And 60 fps halo sounds incredible, ever since playing the shitty port of halo 2 on PC i really hated going back to 30 fps animations in halo 1, and uninterpolated 60 fps just made the game look terrible and jittery.

To be fair, Halo 1 was done by a studio of 50~ of barely-out-of-college fresh faces with some shipped exclusive titles for an anemic platform in a time when the gaming industry was still perceived as a small branch of the toy industry.
Not to defend some of the ugly shit in spv3 ofc. We were ameteurs. It was a long time ago. Some of the assets in this release are almost a decade old. Ok, well, 6 years max.
Even though I've settled professionally into visual effects for now, I still work on similar projects to spv3 like installation01 as a hobby. One of the modelers on spv3 (I believe he did the pistol and the warthog?) now works at CD project red and did a meaty amount of work on The Witcher 3.
Amateur projects are still a rung in the ladder. Don't undermine their importance.
