Edited this together today since Steam was fucked.
I had been thinking about making a video essay about this game for months since I had strong feelings about it. The combat system is amazingly innovative, the sound design is perfect, the attention to detail with the armor and clothing and how they layer on top of each other is great. Despite all this, I can't recommend the game to people because there's barely any content and the updates are so slow. I still love it, it's worth it if you'd like to play around with the combat system since some crazy and awesome shit always happens(thus this video). I might still go back some day and make an actual essay video about my thoughts on it if I feel like people might actually listen but likely not.
hell I don't care about the content I'd probably just buy this for the combat alone
I've been keeping up with it occasionally since the original Kickstarter way back in Octorber 2012, and to be honest I'm just surprised it even got this far. It was really insanely ambitious, and they estimated a release date of may 2014 which was just really obviously not gonna happen.
The combat is really cool but like, IIRC they haven't even gotten around to implementing half of the gameplay features they wanted yet, much less the actual campaign.
Even with this being supposedly half of the features used, it looks to be some intense shit. Even with the bird's eye view the timing makes it all the more important even when you see it coming, you just need to connect your hits and don't trip.
I like it, and want more of it.
I've owned this game for a while. I keep coming back to it cause the combat is just so unique and fun.

Wait its out already? In beta?

It's been Early Access for well over a year now.
It's a hell of a lot of fun. The combat is so visceral and butt-clenchingly intense.
Last time I played with my best friend spectating we made a character who was like the short fat neckbeard. Dragged from his mother basement to fight monsters in a dungeon.
And he fared really well. Starting to grow confidence is fighting and footwork. Untill he stumbled, got knocked over by a sledgehammer the the side and then to his neck.
Ah Exanima, it's just satisfying going back to the combat.
And hammers are overpowered.

I want this as a fully featured open world rpg. Sadly that will never happen from the looks of it.
i bought exanima today and my antivirus thought its a virus
i couldnt install it let alone play it since exceptions dont work
haha i guess ill refund the game

From what I remember, Exanima is basically the gameplay test for an actual full open RPG. It's made to perfect the gameplay before making the proper game because making a fully physics-based animation system is a bitch.

You can swing hammers HARD by bringing your cursor way out and swinging it through to the other side of the opponent in synch with your character. When it connects, it literally sends people flying. You can use it with a crouch to sweep legs right out from under people and then crush their brains against the ground.

Pole hammer is honestly the best weapon in the game. If you do the thrust move and move forward right as the animation thrusts forward, you can also make people go flying onto their backs.
I just do the cheap old overhead 'crouch mid-swing' to get that x2 crushing force.
But yeah, I really do wish there was more to the actual campaign, I already got the [sp]Fully encased metal armour that's powered by gemstones[/sp] and there's just nowhere to go now.

For those curious, Examina is indeed intended to be a combat showcase/demo/source of income for the dev's upcoming game Sui Generis, which is intended to be an open world fully sandbox rpg.
Here's a pretty old alpha vid from the devs' youtube

The two games are being developed together with Examina being it's own smaller thing plus combat focused minigames and Sui Generis being the full on dream rpg.

I was not aware of that, this is great news for me

I wouldn't get your hopes up. With the rate that content comes out for Exanima, a full release of the dream game would take 40 years.
Also, anyone know in better detail how to do those super swings? A video or tutorial available anywhere?
Reminds me a lot of Overgrowth.

Sledgehammer best hammer. Basically, anything long with a lot of mass at the end is a fuckcannon. The sledge is the best I've used in the game, the 2 handed axe is pretty damn good too, but it a little too short. Can send people flying with it but not as easily as the sledge can. The polehammer can hit hard and insta-kill people if you tag an unarmored head, but its raw tossing ability isn't as great.
Made a few webms showing the massive hit thing. Sorry for the potato quality, I dunno how to into webm. Can be hard to tell what's going on, but if you look to the right edge of the screen, you can see the cursor and how it flies to the left really fast as I swing. Makes your character do a full turn with their body as they swing, with a high mass weapon like the sledge it can blast right through blocks/armor/shields and send people to the ground easily. The leg sweep one is the same thing but with a crouch thrown in to attack the legs, useful for shield users since right now the auto-block engine doesn't know how to drop the shield to protect the legs.

I also just love the brutality in this game, you can really smash some people's shit in.
