The original version of Star Wars in 4k UHD. If Disney/Lucasfilm won't do it, I guess we will have to do it ourselves, as usual.
suit'd
I typically don't care about "remasters" or upscales but, wow.
I can't wait for bootleg Blu-Rays, honestly. The Star Wars fan community is really something else.
The best part is I can watch it in 4k for the first time without shitty changes like Jedi Rock's
Good god, looks incredible. At the same time this got me salty as hell because they never officially released that remix of Yoda's Theme.
I pray that they use the unaltered movies and not the digitally enhanced versions.
This will be the ultimate version. I'm very happy.

it is the unaltered, I have the old HD bluray one someone else did

they use a combo of sources, some old shit vhs/laserdiscs, some 35mm film theatrical releases, special edition blu-ray releases, etc.
they take all these sources and essentially combine them, removing any special edition parts and making it look good
the despecialized edition did the same thing for a 1080p remaster:

tbh it actually looks good, maybe not TRUE 4k but it's as good as it can get
this is the definitive edition.
I got curious to see how they were doing this. Came across I think another person attempting something similar:

Pretty interesting to see the process of cleaning each frame and adjusting the colours. The patience required is mad.

i hope to god he's not scrubbing the grain
because it looks like he's scrubbing the grain
and if he is he has no idea what he's doing/talking about
[editline]17th October 2016[/editline]
even in the OP video it looks like he's degraining it which would be so fucking unfortunate to ruin all this great work
Can Disney just fucking release them on blu-ray already? Unbelievable that we have to rely on bootleg releases.

Isn't at least one of the original Star Wars films owned by 20th Century Fox. That might be causing some of the delay.

Yeah they still have the distribution rights for all the films but it's not like it has prevented them from being released in the past.
Maybe Disney really are the greediest of cunts though and are waiting until 2020 for Fox's rights on V and VI to expire.

I know with the disney digital re-releases, only A New Hope has the Fox logo attached to it

Fox only has the digital distribution rights for Episode IV, but they have physical rights on the two others (as well as the prequels).
i swear copyright law is so stupid sometimes it's mindboggling
Is it me or are the blacks kinda crushed? The black and white balance seem off.
Does anyone know what the maximum potential resolution for 35mm film is? Since there are no pixels ands its basically molecules acting on light i image its probably even bigger than 4k
if fox has the rights then why won't fox release HD versions of the original movies?

While fox has distribution rights, they probably still need permission from LucasFilm because they own the IP.

Yes, except now Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, and Disney would never let LF hand over the original cut before they got the distribution rights back
As sacrilegious as this may sound some the CGI enhancements to stuff like the space fights really help the movie sometimes.

The Wizard of Oz was shot on 35mm, and it's last archival scan for the Blu-Ray was at 8k.
But really it all depends on how well the film was shot an preserved, as well as the actual stock used.

This depends a lot on the film and it's grain size and scan method.
A friend of mine took this photo using ISO 20 35mm film and a consumer lens (Canon 100mm f/2.8 L macro), and as you can see the resolution is... plenty :v:
http://puu.sh/rMtM1.jpg
4K resolution (3840*2160)
http://puu.sh/rMtHc.jpg
8K resolution (7680*4320)

keep some of the actual enhancements from those versions, toss the stupid bullshit that doesn't need to be there. like the weird cg scenes that look so out of place
Now I can watch this scene in glorious 4k:
