My Art Appreciation class had a really interesting take on the definition of art. In the class, we had a sort of checklist to see if we could consider it art or not.
1. Is there currently an audience perceiving it as art?
2. Has it been created or conceived as art?
3. (I forgot the third thing).
It seemed like a really solid way to try to nail down what art is. That way you could include art that doesn't really seem like art to many people (or those that discredit something as art because they don't like it) without putting naturally occurring pretty things such as trees in the definition.
