The Visually and Audibly Exhilarating Game Montages Thread
55 replies, posted
There are many low production quality, eye-bleeding video quality, ear-shattering audio quality montage videos on the Internet. This thread is not for any of those.
If you know any number of high-quality montage videos (according to your own and others' professional opinion), feel free to share them in here. Video SFX is not a bad thing, but it's easy to use wrongfully.
Please consider:
- the length of the video vs the content
- the music sampling vs the video cuts
- the visual effects vs its use
- the resolution and artifact-level of the video
- the skillfulness of the gameplay presented in the video
For the full experience, don't forget fullscreen and (at least) 720p
Unfortunately I only remember two of the really good montages I've seen in my time, but here they are:
ALIVE by MiX(eP)

ARCHEO by V-Tal

Your turn.

Yet that is exactly what your second video was. It was awful. Visually unappealing, music that didn't fit at all. And seemed to be basically justifying the use of an aimbot or wallhack. I'll give them credit for a good looking job of modelling District and Crossfire, though.

I'm sorry you disagree, but that video is top ranking in a montage movie contest held by AMD, and I find it audibly and visually appealing.
There is a really good BF3 one. But I can't for the life of me remember it.

Wow it is really annoying me now, trying to find this BF3 video. It was really well edited, every time he fired the pistol it was to the beat of the song and it flowed perfectly.

Well, it's certainly no montage, but it is both visually and audibly exciting.
Just spent the 40 minutes or so looking for a CoD video that's mostly a camera floating around a map, and having 3D colored stuff spouting from all over the map. It was posted here in the video section but I can't find it.
God damn these guys are good at editing videos.
It makes me want to make a frag video. I've always wanted to make one...

Wow, that's cool. What weapon is he using?
It's Pekka 2 has to be the best frag movie I've ever seen.

It's not really THAT hard either. I used to make frag videos when i was in 10th grade. 2 years ago. And i recommend it, it's fun and it will help you understand different types of editing softwares.

The best one. Period.
BeckysClub does very small ones, done with samples of a song each, but I don't think they're half bad.

One guy, Andeh22, is making some pretty damn good montages of MGS:

Most of his stuff uses Dialogue as Narration to great effect:

To INSANE effect

Even questionably cheesy stuff works:

Anyone know good montages for narrative games?

Sure is gory in here.

I know part one of "A Bulgarian Odyssey" was posted, but I really think part two deserves to be on this page as well (I personally prefer part two a bit more):

This is one of my favorites because it just does so much so right.
The kills are fantastic and entertaining, the rage of the players is hilarious, presentation is great, and the gameplay is for the most part synced up with the fantastic music.

what is it with pro css teams and lining their heads up perfectly so that all five of them can get murdered by a single awp?
Any good Counter-Strike 1.6 montages? Can't stand CSS, want to get motivated to kick ass at 1.6.

Well, rechyyy or clayman, has admitted to be using faked frag clips when he was making incorporated 2..
It doesn't matter how well edited these videos are, I still find them boring.
It's more about the substance of the video to me rather than the style, even though style may help. That said, I find Call of Duty montages boring for the most part because I'm used to Quake where the kills seem more impressive to me (airshots, flick-rails, etc.).
How much anyone can appreciate anything depends on how involved they are with the subject as well. FPS is my favorite genre so I love these sorts of montages because they show what insane feats people are capable of in the games that I play. In fact, my favorite all-time gameplay video isn't even a montage, it's a commentary for a replay of a final that the commentator won, describing his thought process throughout the match which really changed how I viewed competitive gaming (match begins at 4:03):
