US TV seems so weird to me.
joke -> complete silence
censored swear word on late night show that every ten year old kid uses -> laughter, cheering and applause
It's always good to see Jon and Stephen together.

I don't understand it either. It seems like you really have to hammer it in that something's supposed to be laughed at to get any sort of audience reaction. I think people are just too used to formulaic jokes in American TV, whereas UK talk shows make everything more casual and down-to-earth. For example, Graham Norton and James Corden don't even have desks to separate them from their guests, and have everyone come in at once (at least with Graham) which makes everything more natural
Why is it that Colbert is much more tolerable than most of the late night hosts on TV right now?

As someone who's been in the audience of this show I can tell you it's a sign that lights up.

It's traditional for audiences to be quiet during the speech, even if there's jokes, but when someone swears on air it's basically like giving the audience the leeway to start cheering aloud since the presenter also 'broke the rules.' Look up the history of what was/was not allowed to be said on air, both radio and television, in the US throughout it's history and you'll see why.
You can get humor out of something unexpected. What is expected is that the presenter is on script or at least professional, Jon Stewart and Colbert were not.

People can handle the truth in bite sized anecdotes, and he always brings a laugh with it.
