I think the style was popularized by Jon Stewart at the Daily Show, and since then has followed with Oliver, Colbert, Samantha Bee, etc.
I don't think Colbert is the perfect pundit or anything but he has a special place in my heart because I used to watch the Colbert Report with my dad back in the days every single week and it was just something we'd bond over. Unfortunately my dad died in 2011 so Colbert is one of those things that reminds me of him. In some ways, Colbert himself reminds me of my dad due to his unique brand of humor.
I love how when he brought up the pee-pee tape, Mark Warner is visibly [I]trying [/I]not to smile. :vs:
