Mostly agree, I gave up on the x-out-of-10 system a long time ago and really just look for points. For aggregate scores I will say the like/dislike scoring method seems to be one of the best since people fuck up the scoring system like pic related: [t]http://i.imgur.com/wQqQPHS.png[/t] Generally I find more value in watching a quick Let's Play on a game I am looking forward to as appose to questionable paid reviews or people rating a game because fanboy/bandwagoning.

The reason why games with a score below ~8 are percieved as "not worth buying" is not because the games are considered bad. It's because you can only buy a limited amount of games every year and instead save your money for the absolute must-haves. For example I'm sure the new Mirrors Edge is a pretty good 6-7/10 game but I don't have the time or money to play it because I'm busy with Uncharted 4 and Overwatch.

Or 36 bucks and 27 cents if we take inflation into account.
Review scores mean nothing. You should just watch a lets play and judge from that really.
Review scores mean nothing. You should just watch a lets play and judge from that really.
Or read/watch a review... Numbers might mean nothing but the opinions actually still mean something the number doesn't devalue that.
Reviews have become more and more useless to the general public as time has gone on, because lets plays and stuff like that reign supreme, and reviews/review websites have been going under flak lately for many different reasons, causing people to make a transition to more longform video reviews in the form of lets plays or just longer more in depth review videos like TB's WTF Is series.
Or read/watch a review... Numbers might mean nothing but the opinions actually still mean something the number doesn't devalue that.
my issue with review's it's hard to find ones that don't spoil anything
Wow this has come up a lot recently. I'll just quote myself from earlier:
I was saying in another thread how 10/100 point scales suck these days because a rating of 5 or 6 just sounds pretty bad already even though it's in the middle. On IMDB once you get to 5 or below it's just all over the place and the difference between a 2 or 3 is almost irrelevant compared to 6 and 7.
This makes trying to give things your own ratings futile too. I realized that I've given most of the movies I've watched recently an 8, because I liked them more than a lot of movies rated 7 but they'e not exactly timeless masterpieces. Having a number scale at that point is just stupid. Also the only thing wrong with the image is that GOTY is now a joke.
Review scores are part of a bigger problem of catering to laziness. A lot of people just want to glance at a review for the score and a few keywords without actually delving too heavily into what a game is composed of and whether or not that composition is worthwhile. How many times have you heard reviews of anything begin with, "the X of Y", where X is any pre-existing game and Y is any genre? Oh, this is the Minecraft of survival horror! And you can bet your ass reviews waste time with sprinkled references to the community in any way, as if the community really means anything when evaluating an individual piece of content. While I'm willing to give some reviewers a chance if they're fairly contextualizing it, I will straight up stop reading a review of something if it says the game is overrated. Fuck that. Review the content itself. Stop with these bullshit shortcuts. Stop with these non-reviews. Stop with the half-witted wordplay. The best reviewers like Half in the Bag make you work for their full opinion because their opinion requires a dissection of what they're reviewing. The worst reviewers are more concerned about views from people that quickly want to assess whether or not they should get something, which also contributes to the problem of people buying terrible games since they're not willing to put into the effort of researching what their money goes towards. It's a full-fledged problem that isn't exclusive to the reviewer or the viewer - it's a problem of equal parts played by everyone.
