I always thought it was an error but I can see how this explanation actually might have been the thinking behind it.
I thought everyone knew that the Kessel system was full of blackholes which is why distance (getting closer to black holes = more speed) mattered?

Never seemed like a common knowledge thing, to me. My brother-in-law still bitches about this and seems to refuse this explanation.
Wow, I feel pretty dumb. I thought parsec was a measure of time.
I also thought they were called "tie fighters" because like....they look like bowties....you know? :saddowns:
Well it's not helped by the theory of the nature of black holes - that if the dilation of time near black holes is true, then cutting corners close to them would be many orders of magnitude slower than keeping your distance.
What use is a shorter journey if it took longer to complete it? After all, the target freighters won't be under time dilation effects.
I wouldn't think the distance from a black hole that would be considered dangerous would add up to much. Or, for that matter, the relatively tiny size of an entire solar system when compared to interstellar space.
I heard that there was an unused part of the script that explained that the whole kessel run and parsec line was just Han talking out his ass to appear like a worthwhile pilot.
Seeing as the Essential series was deemed entirely non-canon I wonder if that's an actually accurate representation of what the Kessel Run is really like. The whole canon/non-canon debacle just made everything more confusing.

It was an error. Fans just try to justify what he says.

Pretty much yeah but it's at least interesting that it can be explained at all.

You can retcon any level of trash after the fact, no matter how ridiculous.
It's either poor research, or deliberately meant to be him talking out of his ass.

That is why they were named that IRL.
In a commentary track on the Star Wars Blu-ray release, George Lucas stated that ships in the Star Wars universe can't travel in straight lines while in hyperspace due to collisions with celestial objects. Thus, distance is an important factor in how quickly a ship can get from point A to point B. The Millennium Falcon's superior navigation computer allowed it to travel shorter distances between points and arrive faster.
And in the new Canon, the answer is basically the same, but there is no mention of black holes, in fact Kessel isn't an asteroid anymore, its a planet.

that explanation falls flat when you toss in relativity, closer to black holes = slower
even if you're traveling in hyperspace or w/e, space is stretched around blackholes
I always liked the "explanation" that Han Solo is a fucking space pirate talking out of his ass to pick up a contract on a backwater planet.
But this explanation of what exactly the Kessel run is isn't anywhere in the movie afaik. Didn't someone, somewhere just make that up at some point later so that the line makes sense again?

But he could be far enough away that's he's only experiencing the gravitational slingshot like modern astronauts/probes do with moons and planets.
It's all fans explaining away a goof either way.
Is he just moving his head for 3.31 seconds with no talking?
in all these years i never knew what the tie in tie-fighter ment, mind blown :v:

It never made sense in the first place, how would it again.
But yes, the explanation is from the EU.
To be honest, I never accepted this explanation. If you look at Obi-Wan after Han says the line, he has this "I know you're bullshitting but I'll play along" look on his face.
