This is a little too far-fetched to believe.
This is something I'd expect as some sort of satirical article on a gaming site, but a quick google search leads to multiple sources reporting on it.
I'd never imagine Runescape, of all things, being an alternative job in a failing economy either, but money is money and it's better than other desperate measures that people turn to.
I don't like that he never really addresses the fact that they're breaking the rules of the game and fucking up the game's economy. People are in tough times allover the globe, constantly, venezuala's crisis putting them on the same level as... other third world gold farmers doesn't really make them special, they still suck, and they obviously damage the game they're making money off.
I havent played RS in over a decade but this would apply to any mmo sandbox with gold farmers.

It's hardly much of a dent in the already common activity of goldfarming and botting that occurs on a regular basis regardless.
I didn't watch the video as being an active member of the OSRS community I'm already well aware of the situation, but what makes this particular instance noteworthy and a little despicable imo is that members of the community are going out of their way to slaughter the Venezuelans for the schadenfreude of destroying someones desperately needed income.
This isn't really the first instance of killing gold-farming green dragon hunters, though. People used to bot hunt which was less personal than this, but considering that there was a massively popular and upvoted thread on the subreddit that gave specific instructions on how to identify and kill Venezuelans in particular (giving tips on how to insult them in their native language, no less), I'm not convinced that this doesn't have condemnable intentions behind it. The OSRS community is notorious for being incredibly toxic and bigoted.

The video discusses that thread briefly.
People are basically considering the Venezuelan players as nothing more than a cancer they need to go slaughter, and if they happen to die in real-life from poverty and starvation, all the better in their eyes. Maybe it's just that Reddit community, but considering the sheer cancer i've seen of the Runescape community to the point that the devs have to ask them for consent to even a gay pride piece of clothing being added in (to which they did, got the consent, and then people forgot and raised utter anti-gay hell anyway), it wouldn't surprise me if there's a genuine attempt to purge Venezuelan players by chunks of the playerbase.

I think it's just more high lighting the morbid idea that Runescape players should go try and stop other players from what they're doing just to get by. He does touch on the fact that most gold farmers are disdained in any MMO scene. It's a really weird moral divide between what people do to kill time off work, and what people do to stay in "work."
Also the Runescape subreddit is a complete cesspool.
All gold farming is bad, no exceptions.
Is it really a good idea to strictly adhere to a moral absolute based around a video game, especially when adhering to it is disrupting people's livelihoods?
All gold farming is bad, no exceptions.
One may hate the bots and players eating up mobs and flooding virtual markets and shit, but if I play a game to enjoy it, it's a nuisance at worst and completely away from my experience at best.
Runescape in 5 years is probably going to be dead
haha no chance
it'll live for another 15 years at the very least
Those comments in the reddit thread are p fucking disgusting
The OSRS subreddit is absolute cancer.

The reason that this is such an issue is because its once again revealing how racist and disgusting the community can be. RWT is a huge issue in runescape, yet the only time people band together to do something about it is when it has to do with race or something similar. Nobody is banding together to get rid of the people hacking/phishing accounts that have their gold taken and put up for sale. They just have an excuse to be racist and use your argument as a reason to do it. The last time people came together like this was for the pride event, and people were being homophobic while using the excuse that political beliefs have no place in video games.

For active games, sure. For dead/dying games? Not sure I agree.
Let me give you an example. High end content in Guild Wars is only alive because of bots. Most consumable items used for speed clearing content only drop during special events, and many of the year round consumables require substantial amounts of basic materials.
All of these are incredibly tedious to farm yourself, and the quantities demanded by active players simply exceeds what would ever be available without bots. Gold itself has become devalued, but the game has a (relatively) tiny gold cap, and alternate forms of currency have been used in place of gold for high value transactions since shortly after launch for that reason. The alternate forms of currency and consumables have remained relatively stable relative to each other in value for years now.
The one consumable that is simply not bottable has undergone absurd hyperinflation despite it only being used in a tiny handful of situations due to caps on certain effects stacking.
The total market saturation has actually been a substantial boon for the game's health as a whole. Collectors items (which don't have better stats because Guild Wars is almost entirely skin based) have undergone absurd hyperinflation, but new players can quickly and cheaply equip themselves with gear and consumables to immediately start learning content. The game is in many ways more accessible than it has been at any point in history, and the simple fact of the matter is that that would not be possible without bots. Yes, the game is dead insofar as general content is concerned, but brand new players can start clearing high end content after a weekend's worth of work.
and frankly how does the state of runescape's economy at all compare to the ability for some people to eat? Runescape in 5 years is probably going to be dead, the effects of people having to live on nothing or starve will last life times.
im not saying gold farming is gude guys just go do it, but people need not lose perspective. None of these people are doing it by choice, Venezuela is a complete hell hole, they're doing it because they have the same will to live and to provide for themselves and their families just like anyone else.
It's absolutely disgusting that people are specifically targeting them, and anyone found doing that should definitely be banned, but Jagex is not a charity - the gold farmers need to be banned too.
Am I going to seek them out? No. But where does it end? Am I going to pass up every potential player kill in the wilderness because they may or not have a shitty real life? No.
If they want to call it a job they should treat it like one and find something safer.

Not trying to make excuses, but a lot of them are fed up with Jagex's ineptitude and inability to respond to these problems. RWTers are never permanently banned, advertising and scamming is rampant and unpunished ingame, and there are dozens of daily phishing streams on twitch that are just left there untouched.

If you still think that Jagex is completely inept when it comes to dealing with these issues then you haven't been paying much attention. They've improved vastly since the release of OSRS. Permabanning people doesn't solve the issue of RWT anyways. Those streams you talk about are actually taken down constantly, but its not hard to make another account and buy another viewbot, which is Twitch's problem anyways. The bigger issue here is the community. The only reason that all these idiots are coming out of the woodworks to use RWT as an excuse to be racist is because Jagex was attempting to deal with the issue, and brought attention to it. Its not like they needed people to go into the wilderness and kill people trying to make money, people have been doing that always. I really can't fathom how people still think that Jagex can't deal with scamming and RWT when they've done so much to counter it. My only problem with Jagex is that they can't get a handle on the rampant racism, homophobia, and sexism that is prevelant in both the subreddit and in game.
given you can turn off the profanity filter in Runescape, there will never be an end to racism, homophobia, and sexism in Runescape.

and they aren't a license to say whatever you want, either

Online games are a weird platform for free speech since players are international and have their own laws/cultures about what is and isn't appropriate to say. More often I see hate speech as a meme for teens/edgelords, but it can get obstructive if it persists.
Can't blame osrs for targeting gold farmers though; its not the players' fault that Venezuela's economy is shit. Gold farmers are hurting the game's economy, and they're not really much better than the bots that are already a problem.

What I meant was turning a profanity filter off doesn't magically make verbal harassment okay.
I have no problem with people camping there and pking them. Their real life situation is unknowable and irrelevant to any of this. Like I said earlier, Jagex is not a charity, and if this is affecting their bottom line then there is an obligation to put an end to it. I was merely suggesting that anyone found saying anything resembling what was found in that disgrace of a reddit thread should be banned right along with the gold farmers.
