DF is great, you're missing out if you quit because its too hard to play.
My god dwarf fortress looks like a piece of shit, There's retro styled graphics, but this is on the level of zero effort. I mean jesus christ, the C64 could put out better graphics than this.

It's called ASCII, literally using text to indicate things and such as a basic graphics interface of sorts.

Why not just use standard bitmaps, this is absolutely ridiculous.

Bad Graphics ≠ Bad Game

There are texture packs for the game which makes it easier to view if the ASCII is hurting you that badly.

The Phoebus Tileset.
Here's the Lazy Newb Pack, which comes with tilesets as well as some other handy features.

When it looks so bad you cant tell what stuff is even supposed to be, then there are serious problems
You can get sprites for it if you want.
When it looks so bad you cant tell two objects apart, then there are serious problems
Only really a problem in the beginning. It really is a case of learning to read it, yeah it's not great and yes it's a bit of a barrier, but dismissing the game because you initially have trouble differentiating things is silly. There are tilesets out there that you can use if it bothers you that much and to be honest, with the amount of features Toady is still cramming into it I don't mind if the graphics are less than optimal.

Exactly. Sure the graphics could be better but the staggering amount of features and gameplay mechanics make up for that and then some.

Hey you know what, try the game for about 20 minutes and you'll see it's not that hard. If it still is, get a tilepack. If you still want to complain, well, don't.
Eh, still not going to get it. It seems to just be an RTS minecraft

with terribad graphics

I played it for like 5 minutes a couple of years ago, all i remembered is that you had some dwarves, and everything was unrecognizable, they could do stuff like resource collection, but that was about it. I got tired after trying to figure out how to do anything whatsoever

there are legitimate criticisms of dwarf fortress, like the obtuse UI and the somewhat questionable optimization
and then there's this one
There are plenty of tutorials that can get you started quickly. There's even a book published. If nothing else, read a couple of stories that have emerged from people playing Dwarf Fortress, if you still aren't interested then so be it.

I think the controls are actually a much bigger problem in dwarf fortress than the graphics...

I think it'd be a big improvement if you could control things with your mouse

That's too bad you had a bad experience with it and despite having played it you obviously know nothing about, which renders all your opinions in this thread worthless. The lack of graphics is intentional, it's a throw back to pencil and paper and text based rpg's like dungeons and dragons. Part of the idea is that the less visual input you have, the less your imagination is hampered in creating its own visual experience. Besides the game is much too complex and feature rich to represent in a reasonable way, especially considering the development team is two members large (and even then only toady does actual programming). The game simulates a multitude of complex systems and is, in my informed opinion, one of the most, if not the most accurate and intricate implementation of world generation and simulation. Weather is completely dynamic, combat factors in hundreds of variables, the wound system is accurate down to individual limbs and organs, a complete fluid pressure simulation handles water and lava, geology, animal behavior, mud tracking, crafting, the list literally goes on and on. And it's only getting better.
It's kinda pathetic that you expect a game that's been in development for 15+ years to conform to whatever your expectations happen to be, and clearly the game just isn't for you. It has a very active and devout following, and with good reason. Stop shitting up this thread with your drivel.

I expect a game that has been in development for 15 years to at least had some playability testing. The visual design must have been made by a monkey. A game can have fantastic simulation and world gen. But severly lacking visuals can drag down how impressive it is.

clearly DF isn't the game for you; I myself enjoy it because of all the fantastic shit my mind makes up. While a megabeast might only be one or two characters, it's described in detail and your mind gets to have fun with it - what does a giant spider with twenty legs, four bulging red eyes, and spews out noxious, poisonous ooze look like in your mind? how do you picture a dwarf ripping out his own tooth and throwing it at a goblin?
go back to playing whatever it is you like to play and don't be such a close minded person

I really hope you are trolling or something because these arguments sound like what I would say if I wanted to annoy DF fans on purpose and pretend I was some kind of stereotypical COD kid.
